What Steam players say
Recent verbatim reviews from Steam — separate from playze.io community reviews below.
Guild Wars 1 is praised by fans as a classic with exceptional character skill building and story content that some consider superior to its sequel, with no subscription fees or pay-to-win mechanics. However, new and returning players frequently criticize the steep difficulty curve, tedious progression systems like slow skill unlocking and mandatory party-based play with shared rewards, along with poor quality-of-life features such as lacking waypoints and punishing death mechanics. Technical issues including mobile incompatibility are also cited as concerns.
Likely gonna flamed for this by the nostalgia bait team. But this game is not enjoyable, or fun. I don't care what it looks like, for an old game it's passable and it has charm on that front. But as a new player, this game is terrible. No tutorial to really speak of, I'm not on about hand holding, I don't want hand holding. But some basic direction would go a long way. Very badly balanced early game. Enemies are in packs and are tethered together, standard practice for MMO's. However, even level 1 enemies do upwards of a 1/3 of your health bar with each attack. You do so little damage back you just die over and over. Then it spawns you at a place you've not even visited yet, ruining natural exploration. You keep picking up stuff off the floor that you have to identify, how do you do that? I don't know, the game never tells you. Even after clicking through it's menu's I couldn't find an answer, tried merchants, no luck either. I wanted to like the game, try and catch some of the apparent fun that a lot of people seem to have. But I just can't find it. "You only played for an hour!" True, I did. Because the game was confusing, frustrating, lacking in direction, and badly bala…4 found this helpful
I played this for a few hours into, then sort of forgot about it... years later I replayed it due to one thing: the mobile version. Then I found out how everything I got when I was playing from PC transferred well over the mobile port (minus the imperfect UI), and I found myself starting over and completing half of Prophecies. Then I know I was hooked. Someone mentioned how GW1 was the 'passion project' of the devs, and how it doesn't really make them money. Perhaps that was true, I can hardly think about how they can make the mechanics be monetized. Most of GW1 can be played 'single player' with henchmen and heroes, and so the devs are putting up servers indefinitely just for us, and for 'free' in a sense. Even the expansions, although purchasable, are only a one-time thing, and the devs worked themselves off right after the base game. Well, they got GW2 for all the money they need, for GW3, and more. As I told my friend, GW2 was made for the tiktok generation (before tiktok is even a thing): everything was rather handed to you freely in terms of combat. Not so in GW1: you had to collect skills (ala pokemon) and later on had to think about which ones to bring with you when explo…4 found this helpful
Can't recommend in it's current state on the MSI Claw 8 ex ai+. It crashes constantly.2 found this helpful
MMOs are better when you can only have a limited amount of skills equipped, but with 100s to choose from.1 found this helpful
Just like your old room when you were a kid : you had fun with it, but now it's empty and smells like nostalgia.
Reforged is what a great remaster should be: it respects the original while making the experience much better for modern players. The depth of the builds, hero system, farming, loot, and endgame progression is still unmatched. You can theorycraft for hours, build your own team, target-farm specific items, and keep progressing without being forced into daily chores or seasonal resets. It feels like a game made for players who actually enjoy playing RPGs—not chasing a treadmill. If you like deep buildcraft, meaningful progression, and old-school RPG design, Reforged is absolutely worth playing.
