9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a hardcore beat 'em up where you play as a vengeful fisherman mastering Shaolin martial arts to take down pirate hordes across Medieval China. It combines classic side-scrolling brawler action with three unique fighting styles, extensive character progression, and a gripping kung-fu story that captures the spirit of 70s martial arts cinema.

"If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle".

✦ AI summary

9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a solid 3D beat-em-up with satisfying combat, a variety of moves and weapons, and an appealing Eastern-themed art style that players find enjoyable, though it suffers from repetitive gameplay and some balancing issues that can frustrate early on. The single-player experience is generally considered worthwhile, but local co-op feels underdeveloped and the game lacks the innovation needed to be a standout title. Players suggest picking it up during a sale rather than at full price, particularly if you enjoy classic brawlers or want a portable game for handheld devices.

Good combat, and that's about it. It didn't feel totally right to give the game a negative review, but I hope I can justify it well enough. The combat is well done. There's depth and plenty of combos you can produce, movement works well in most arenas, and parrying worked fine for me (having a very generous window), and you are able to move to your next action almost immediately. It's satisfying and fun. Enemies become sponges pretty quickly, weapon variety is short and limits playstyles to the obvious best ones, the skill tree is, to its detriment, too huge, arenas are sometimes pretty cluttered, and missions are really short, and the fighting sections that divided them always feel underwhelming. The story is generic, the dialogue is bland, and the voice acting is soulless. The graphics also look and feel pretty choppy, unlike the front page suggests. Aside from the combat, I quickly grew tired of everything else because it felt like those elements were an afterthought and largely neglected. I can't speak on the co-op since I didn't try it.

Surprisingly good 3D brawler. Real 3D beat em ups are few and far between these days as they never really caught on to begin with. While this game does play it fairly by the book as far as the gameplay is concerned, it is a fun hack and slash style brawler in the vein of Golden Axe or the Capcom D&D Belt Scrollers but in an Eastern setting.

The (local) co-op feels like an afterthought. Just a second puncher in the fights without any other interaction with the world. The story was kinda nice and I appreciate the native linux support and might recommend it, but I did not enjoy playing the game with a friend. Single player is fine ig.

Really enjoyed this one! The combat is fun and satisfying, and there’s a nice variety of moves, weapons and enemies. The art style is lovely and the story is interesting enough to keep things moving. It can get a little repetitive at times, but overall it’s a fun and enjoyable beat ’em up that I’m glad I played. 😊

This game is......fine. As a 2D, beat-em-up game, it's simply....fine. There's nothing about the game that's Earth shattering or ground breaking. The graphics are sub-par, the gameplay mechanics are ok but repetitive, the story is simple, and the voice acting is done moderately well at times and stereotypically cheesy other times. I bought the game for around $5. If you're just looking for a simple game that can be finished in less than a day, this is your game. If you're looking for a game that'll play well on your handheld device, then this is your game. If you're looking for the next sleeper Indie hit, this is NOT your game.

Just after start a solo game you face a couple of enemies that attack you from distance that you cannot reach nor hit. Died twice and deleted the game. What a terrible onboarding experience.
