In Stars And Time

Lets start with the positives. I like the characters, Odile lives in my head rent free and Siffrin is one of the realest protagonists out there. I enjoy the art a lot, the style and the greyscale. I love the world building and all the little details regarding it, I find it incredibly fascinating. I see people have issue with the dialogue but at most theres long pauses you cannot skip through and in a game about repetition it can get annoying when you don't want to wait that period out, otherwise I found it fine. The main issue is the gameplay. It was fine at first but it progressively got more and more frustrating for me. By the time I reached act 4 I mostly wanted the game done, I did any Odile related side things (because to be completely honest she was my reason to keep going) and finished the game from there. By the end I was just done with it and wrote the game off. Sadly, I looked into the game further and into fan stuff and enjoyed a lot of the stuff done, the game tickles a specific aesthetic for me and the fanart only adds to it more, to the point I may even consider myself a fan. This game introduces a lot of neat ideas/story and gameplay stuff but ultimately does nothing interesting with it. This game also felt very tedious. Also, a looping game in monochrome environment that looks the exact same as every other screen is a decision I did not anticipate nor when I enjoyed.

I would like to preface this by saying it is very rare at all for me to write a positive review, especially one at a decent length regarding a game. This review will feature spoilers for the whole game, albeit, spoilers will be hidden. Please, if you have not played, do not spoil yourself. I had this game recommended to me via steam, and I was intrigued by not just the art style, but also the concept of being stuck in a time loop and trying to break out of it. Suffice to say, having played both this game in full, as well as its demo, there is no other game that represents not only the tragedy of being stuck in a time loop this well, but, in my case, a very relatable and down-right surreal representation of me personally in a character: the protagonist Siffrin. Through Siffrin, you get to see their innocence and wonder being with their family and fighting the King vanish over time as you progress through the acts. As the player controlling Siffrin, you also are impacted, as Siffrin in a way does represent how the player feels, in my opinion. Beautiful experience, hard to describe as a game as the gameplay intentionally gets in the way at certain points, but it's a painful yet heartwarming story that can only be told through the medium. Great writing and characters throughout - 9/10

Holy Crab, Stars and Gems alive, what a great game! Amazing music, great story and very likeable characters. If you like some time shenenigans, adventure and existential dread this game is just for you! Imo battle system is a lil bit too easy and repetitive but the rest of the game's traits make up for it. I really WISH I could experience first playing this game once more, but I guess that's not really possible... huh, something's off... why can I smell burnt sugar...?
