Explore beautiful cities in an open world.
In the mixed cultural landscape of Edo, Yokohama, and Kyoto during the Bakumatsu period, you can explore stunning scenery with seasonal changes like cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. You can use a grappling rope to climb onto rooftops and the glider Avicula to glide through the air. Additionally, you can capture your favorite views using Photo Mode.

Rise of the Ronin draws divided opinions from players, with some praising its multi-stance combat system, relationship mechanics, and narrative depth around historical figures and faction complexity, while others criticize its performance issues, clunky animations, repetitive fetch-quest design, and awkward stance-switching combat that feels dated.
"sigh"....played for less than an hour and performance is awful graphics are blurry and inconsistent...really wanted to like this but in its current state...its hard....really hard i am doubtful but i hope they fix it shame for such a cool game to go to waste leaving a negative for now i REALLY hope they give me a reason to change it in the future2 found this helpful
It's Assassin's Creed but clunkier and with leveling/loot mechanics. Considering it's titled "Rise of the Ronin" the game basically forces you to play like a ninja most of the time. On top of that you literally are a ninja in the story, not a ronin. And if that wasn't enough to kill the vibe, the game takes place during the fall of the samurai so it's not even set during the rise of the ronin, it's set during the eradication of them. Would it kill someone to make a new samurai game where you're actually a samurai set in the prime of the samurai era and get to fight like a samurai? Exploration is your generic open world slop with countless of irrelevant collectibles and climbing segments, complete with glider mechanics. Everything in the world feels rigid and empty, you never feel immersed in it and everything just exists to pad the play time between story scenes. And most of the architecture and settings are western/European, about half of the gear too. Combat is extremely tedious and one-sided, it's heavily focused on parrying mechanics but the enemies all have completely sporadic movements and attacks and the parry timing is extremely narrow. On top of that every single…2 found this helpful
This game has become one of my favorite games of all time. The multiple stance per weapon were really fun to play and learn. Compared to other games, I'd say I see aspects of Nioh and Sekiro in terms of combat and the map objectives laid out kind of like Assassins Creed. The game has a cool historical timeline and allows relationships with historical figures to the protagonist. I was able to stay immersed with the character I made along with the story. The game really captures how complicated war among two sides can be along with the entanglement of relationships from both factions. The hand to hand combat is one thing that I wish there were more stances for. I really really enjoyed this one and the one thing that really stuck out to me was how great they wrote Ryoma Sakamoto's character.
I rarely rate games negatively, I wanted to like it, I really did. There are performance issues that I would overlook in more enjoyable games, but: The rock paper scissor stance switch followed by button mash combat is not enjoyable. It’s a fetch quest simulator. The character movements feel like something out of the 2000s
cool game
I have the fondest memories of this game on PS2. Definitely the best samurai game on the console - the open world structure was almost un-heard of back then. I remember in the moment the combat being the reason for all the bad reviews but to me it was clearly ahead of its time. When the remaster hit PS3 when I was in college it was like a dream come true. And the full remake for PS4? I mean come on. I'm so glad to see this version has finally been ported to modern machines, in high-res and everything. Great time for vintage action game enthusiasts.
