Quick! Slash that guy! PAUSE... Oh, uh... Slash THAT guy! PAUSE... Okay...
Ronin instantly reminded me of Mark of the Ninja, but the gameplay couldn't be more different. It's a side-scrolling action platformer with a turn-based twist. Not something you see very often... if ever. The art style isn't the greatest, but it fits the game well enough. The gameplay is what kept me coming back, with each encounter feeling like a little tactical puzzle. The story, on the other hand... I honestly don't remember much of it. Either it wasn't very memorable, or my brain decided to overwrite it with more important information. All in all, I'd recommend it. It's one of those hidden indie gems that's easy to overlook but well worth playing. Promising concept but imprecise controls spoil it. Jumps don't get to platforms you feel like they should. Even though you can see the enemy's line of fire you won't know if its going to hit you because your hitbox is weird. A tooltip reads "the jump indicator is a lie", girl, the jump indicator is half the game. This would make the game unplayably frustrating except that it autosaves before every fight. This compromise makes planning your kills beforehand even less advisable so you end up thinking on the fly. Thinking on the fly also isn't great because there aren't that many ways for you to interact with the enemies. In combat you can't move to the side or climb up walls and you can only kill with ledge kills and stabs. Maybe worth trying if you liked the games that inspired this, sometimes the world works how you expect and you feel like a ninja

Gameplay is easy to understand but deep enough to stay interesting. Aesthetic, music, and vibes are excellent

Game is good but not worth at full price wait for sale before buying. Rating: 7/10 A bit similar to GunPoint and even makes a few references to the game. Cons In my opinion the worst part about the game is the somewhat clunky controls. You can move freely when not in combat, the game considers you out of combat when not in line of sight of an enemy. And when your in combat that’s when the turn based gameplay begins where you try to close the distance and dodge bullets to slash, stun, and kick your enemy’s out of windows. However this unique game mechanic works against you in weird ways that break immersion. For example if you stun an enemy and they get knocked away it will take a few turns for them to get back up so you have to awkwardly bunny hop your way to them instead of just walking over. You can only jump when in combat even if the only person left just got drop kicked down three story’s and is now crippled but you just need to finish him off. The grapple hook also feels hard to use and gets frustrating when it decides to switch what surface to latch onto. The game also has limited animations when executing enemy’s and doing other stuff. Pros The game has a nice art s…

Ronin is a game that showcases its flaws, rather than its strengths. Frequently you will have to switch between turn-based and real-time movement, with both requiring precision in the middle of combat, virtually no controls in common, and almost no indication of which one you need to use. With such precision being necessary, it's frustrating when jump indicators don't factor in environmental information (things that will slow you down, or kill you outright). Or when your grappling hook bugs out, and clips you through a ceiling. The story is minimalist, but still doesn't surprise you the way that the first Hitman game did, so the few beats that are there don't have much punch. That said, this game *is* more than just the fusion of Gunpoint and Hotline Miami that clearly inspired its gameplay, and the soundtrack and visuals are on the upper tier of indie games. I'd feel bad about not recommending this one, if it weren't so old at this point. Get this one on sale.
