One of my favorite games from my childhood. So many good memories of playing this on my fathers computer,,,

A shot of nostalgia from the past, I was surprised to see 'Cyberia' reappear like an old memory from years and years ago. Like many of us, I experienced this adventure for free, packaged with either an IBM computer from Radio Shack or a box set together with 'Descent' from 1995. I don't think it ever sold very well so Steam charging anything for the title today is highway robbery. While it's not an entirely terrible title, 'Cyberia' does feature a paper-thin plot, weak writing, and is so brief that it is practically a software demo rather than a complete product. The story is an extraordinarily generic tale of the prototypical bounty hunter recently liberated from prison by the archetype client to seek an unclear narrative macguffin. The plot development is practically nonexistent with odd pacing and unpredictable balance, sometimes easy-peasy and sometimes traumatically difficult. The artwork and ambiance was real pretty in the mid-90's in its high-res 640x480 VGA graphics and is passable today. It's an Adventure game (not an FPS), so it might take some getting used to for newer generations of gamers. It uses a checkpoint save system, and you will have to figure out what to do with a lot of trial and error (this means dying a lot--get used to it). Even if you knew what to do, executing it is still difficult; puzzles and action sequences are challenging even on easy. The hardest thing to get used to is enabling mouse control in the fly-through fight sequences; press F to enable, and press again to uninvert the Y axis (I think you only have to do this once). Mouse movement is a bit more difficult on a widescreen display because of the resolution scaling; I recommend playing on a standard monitor if you have one available. It uses DosBox, so you can edit the config files to customize the configuration. TBH: This game is dated as ♥♥♥♥, but you're probably only here if you played it in your childhood. Buy it anyway.

Stylish time capsule supreme. This one's a clumsy nostalgic day trip for me every time. This is an excellent example of a top-of-the-line (at the time) graphics interface melting between genres. An essential example of game designers throwing everything at the wall and hoping something sticks. The story line segments are dated by contemporary standards. On the other hand this game's finest moments in my experience are the cinematic-flying-shooting stages. The other action sequences were too difficult for most of us back in the day. Most of the puzzles are about arcade timing with an attempt at a brain teaser now and then. Remember that this is the first game I ever played that allowed the player to numerically choose between arcade and puzzle difficulty. I figured out quick that you couldn't have both puzzle and arcade difficulties set at the lowest levels. "...is too easy," the female-borg voice would declare. What made this game stand out was the monumentally amazing graphics it had (back in the day) and the way it would move through a interesting story very smoothly.
