Tales of Maj'Eyal is praised by players for its engaging roguelike gameplay, mechanical depth, diverse classes, and rich lore that offer significant replayability and variety. However, the game suffers from notable technical issues including frequent crashes and save file loading failures that frustrate returning players and undermine its recommendability. Most players who can get past the technical problems find it worthwhile, though the stability issues make this a questionable purchase in its current state.
I used to play this game all the time, absolutely loved it. Trying to revisit it though is like pulling teeth - between the game crashing and being simply unable to load any save files, it makes it really hard to want to recommend this to anyone in it's current state. I have no workshop addons, I verify my files before playing, and still cannot load saved characters, i just get a lua error and kicked back to the main menu. If you don't experience technical issues it really can be a fun rpg with a ton of mechanical depth, but honestly I would just like to be able to play it. I honestly really do love this game, I played the hell out of it back when it was a seperately downloadable engine and even did the icons for some of the archer classes - but it constantly crashes, sometimes doesnt let me load saves, has weirdly long load times, and generally makes it very hard to actually play the game.3 found this helpful
A truly amazing roguelike. The lore, the classes it has it all. Well sounds are a bit weak but there are free mods to cover that end. Otherwise I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend buying this game.
