About TR-49

✦ AI summary

TR-49 is a narrative deduction game where you explore a hidden archive of obscure texts created by Bletchley Park engineers to crack the code of reality, linking obscure sources together to locate a stolen book before time runs out. Communicate with your handler through dynamic audio drama as you unravel the machine's creators' secrets and navigate a mystery that could rewrite the world.

A voice is saying your name. A WWII-era machine, long hidden in a church basement, whirs to life. Through a crackling speaker, a man asks you to find a stolen book. He only knows the title. Time is running out. The machine, created by Bletchley Park engineers Cecil Caulderly and Beatrice Dooler, contains a vast archive of obscure books, letters, and journals fed in over the span of fifty years in an attempt to crack the code of reality. As their lives fell apart, the machine kept working.  Navigate the computer’s archive. Link its obscure texts and uncover its creators’ secrets. Communicate with the man behind the speaker to figure out your role in this mystery. Destroy the book at the core of the machine — before it’s too late.
  • Deduce links through the archive to locate hidden sources.
  • Unravel the stories and unearth the secrets of the books’ authors and the machine's creators.
  • Map the archive and find the book that will rewrite the world.
  • Talk with your handler at any time, creating a dynamic audio drama that responds as you explore.
  • Featuring the voices of Rebekah McLoughlin (The SCP Archives, Eternal Threads), Paul Warren (A Highland Song, Viewfinder, The Séance of Blake Manor) and Phillipe Bosher (Baldur's Gate 3, Doctor Who, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy).
  • Original soundtrack by Laurence Chapman (A Highland Song, Heaven's Vault, The Mask of the Rose).

TR-49 takes inspiration from narrative deduction games like The Roottrees are Dead, The Return of the Obra Dinn, Type Help and Her Story, and from audio dramas like The Magnus Archives and ars PARADOXICA. Written and created by the award-winning team behind Heaven's Vault, Overboard!, and A Highland Song.

✦ AI summary

TR-49 draws players in with an intriguing story and compelling mystery, but opinion splits sharply on its puzzle design and payoff. Some praise the deduction gameplay and atmospheric mystery-solving, while others criticize inconsistent puzzle logic, obscure clues that feel more like mind-reading than fair design, and an ending that doesn't quite land; the game's heavy emphasis on reading and the ease of brute-forcing solutions rather than solving puzzles properly frustrates those seeking more satisfying puzzle design.

I beat it, but I finished it hating the game. At first, it's super intriguing. I was really pulled in by the story, characters, and mystery. Unfortunately, the farther I got, the worse the experience became. Firstly, the puzzle logic is all over the place and often undersignaled...like you're expected to read the designer's mind rather than follow clues, piece breadcrumbs together, and arrive at a satisfying solution. Additionally, too many clues felt like obscure needles in a haystack for such a short game, especially when the game puts significant emphasis on specific things that are clearly there to throw you off track. It comes off as cheesy and poorly designed. The game also makes brute-forcing codes easier and more tempting than actually solving its puzzles. I was able to avoid the temptation most of the time, but it's a terrible design choice for a game where tiny hints buried in pages of text can be essential to understanding the story and progressing. This can happen by accident as well! The code input device doesn't reset after entering a code, so while typing a new one, the leftover characters can accidentally form another valid code and immediately send you to a page…

Very nice explorative puzzle game, the last puzzle had me stumped for a while because of a missunderstanding.

A very compelling mystery where the gameplay quickly got me fully into the game to the point I often missed chances to speak to Liam since I was too focused connecting dots in the manuscripts. Definitely worth a try if you enjoy a good puzzle, detective game, just pay attention to what you are typing!

Deduction gameplay is fun, but the story and in particular the ending doesn't quite land. On the other hand it's not very expensive. Don't buy if you don't like reading because it's like 95% of the gameplay.
