About Unknown Tapes

About us

As an indie studio made up of two guys video game enthusiasts, we really wanted to play a horror video game with dinosaurs, so we decided to create one ourselves. Any feedback is welcome to help us improve, even for future games that are on the way!

You are the prey

Unknown Tapes is a horror video game that employs the found footage technique to narrate a story focused on survival in a modern setting overrun by dinosaurs. It aims for realism and draws inspiration from Dino Crisis and Outlast.
A story will unfold, with an expected playtime of 2-3 hours from start to finishYou are being hunted by dinosaurs, and you will need to hide, avoid making too much noise, and sometimes use your wits.Buildings can be destroyed by larger dinosaurs, so you can't always count on finding protection inside. The game is primarily set at night, featuring both outdoor and indoor environments, some of which may feel claustrophobic.

An Infested Urban World

Thanks to photogrammetry and the graphical power of Unreal Engine 5, we’ve recreated detailed urban environments. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk through a town overrun by dinosaurs?

Real-Time Voice Detection

Thanks to the use of the microphone, dinosaurs can hear your voice when you talk or shout in the real world and will react accordingly to what they perceive

Photogrammetry

We used the most advanced photogrammetry software to directly bring real-world objects and environments into the game. Many of the things you see actually exist in the real world

Motion Tracking

Using various software and solutions, we successfully recreated a realistic camera movement by digitizing it and integrating it into the game

Key features

  • First-person narrative walking simulator set in a world full of dinosaurs
  • VHS effect
  • Bodycam effect
  • Blair Witch Project vibes with a tense atmosphere
  • Realistic graphics using photogrammetry
  • Player's voice detected through microphone

As much as I wanted to like this game, this game wasn't what I wanted it to be. BTW, this is my personal opinion on the game. I know others would like this, but personally, I didn't really like it. Before I go on a rant, let me go over some things I liked: - The dinosaur designs were great, as well as the variety. - The VHS-style camera was unique, and it gave a really nice atmosphere to the game. - Every screenshot I took in the game looked semi-realistic, and as if it were taken by a real camera. - The lore was interesting, all be it not the best at "hooking" me. - I must admit, some jumpscares were pretty fire. - Moments where I felt genuine fear. - Peak audio design sometimes. - Short story, an average person could beat it within 2 hours. Now, what I disliked: - Dinosaurs feel neglected; an afterthought to justify the lore (especially the big hitters like Therizinosaurus, Spinosaurus, and Tyrannosaurus Rex. - Dinosaur AI sucks - I got used to the jump scares. - There's really only one main dinosaur you have to worry about. - It feels boring at times, more of a walking sim (no hate against them) - Story-wise, I wasn't that interested in the main character or his justification.…

I'm so glad a game like this exists. There aren't many dinosaur psychological horror games out there, and it's a concept with a lot of potential that needs to be explored further. Atmosphere was great, especially the first open areas where you're afraid anything could appear at any moment. Visuals are awesome too, with really cool dinosaur models. The story has some very interesting ideas like the MARP-1, although the character's main goal doesn't feel important at all. We just get a text in the beginning and what happened right at the end, but we don't discover anything about it while playing, so it doesn't feel relevant during the game itself. Also, the bigger dinosaurs could've been used better. The models are really cool and there are a couple of moments that feel terrifying, but they are never really a threat since they only have fixed jumpscares. Because of this, Raptors end up being too common. Finally, there are some aspects that are surprisingly unpolished. It's not a big deal, but the interface with the current goals is really crappy and out of place compared to how immersive and awesome the game looks. But again, even with all its flaws, I had a great time playing t…
