Lucky me gets to write the first English review for Commander: Zombie Wars, which is a mobile app that got launched on Steam instead of the app stores by mistake. True story, the devs only do mobile app trash and keep dumping this mobile garbage on Steam to annoy PC gamers. If we wanted to play mobile games we'd just use our phones instead of PC, you know? We're here to play PC games. Anyway the mobile devs behind this game just keep churning out the same kinds of turn based strategy games, all from the same game engine they keep reskinning/twiddling around with. Like Marge Simpson's overaltered dress (remember that episode?). This one is half-baked and has you controlling survivors in a zombie apocalypse. Heck, if it was made properly by real developers instead of mobile app guys this might even have gone somewhere. Let's go into the list of common technical defects that plague this mobile app. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Don’t be fooled by the seeming competence exhibited by the short gameplay vids or the visuals: this is gamedev kit, barest-of-bones malarkey. To wit: no tutorial, tooltips, or documentation whatsoever; no campaign, no scenarios beyond the most basic of symmetrical maps, and no script/scripted events; no combat details; no feeling of someone behind the wheel at any time, no sense of agency: just no damned fun. Feels like the skeleton of a build-your-own strategy game template with nothing added outside of AI-generated cover images.
