SONIC WINGS REUNION

I've played the older Sonic Wings/Aero Fighters games when I was a kid (even though I'm admittedly terrible at them). I would rank Reunion as an okay title in the series. It does the bare minimum to qualify as a Sonic Wings game but falls far short of what is expected of one, especially in 2026. Graphics: Sonic Wings goes with 2.5D graphics which is a step up from the older Neo Geo games, but the models for the enemies and the environment lack polish and feel kind of dated, almost like a PS2-era game. The color of the enemy projectiles sometimes clash with the background, making them hard to spot. Sound: Reunion comes with a new soundtrack that didn't really leave an impression on me. However, you do have the option of playing with an arranged soundtrack made up of remixed songs from the past games including my personal favorite, the boss theme from AF3 ("SHOW ME WHAT YOU'VE GOOOOOOT"). You can even customize the music for each stage and boss, although I wish the selection of music tracks could have been bigger. I purchased this game for $17.99. Sonic Wings Reunion feels like a 3D knockoff of the original Sonic Wings franchise. The first game that I played in the series was Sonic Wings on the SFC back in 1993. The game feels very generic compared to the original sprite work. Using the analog stick the game feel very stilted and not really responsive. I recommend using a Dpad or an arcade stick. On the plus side, Sonic Wings Reunion runs at an 600+ FPS on my system without Vsync. I am going to keep this game since I love shooters, but for anyone else I'd wait for a steep discount (around $5 - $10) to pick this one up. This remake feels very phoned in for an legendary franchise.

Objectively, a piece of doo-doo. Subjectively? For whatever reason, I love this game lol. It just puts me in a trance and it's freeing and fun. The dialogue is hilarious, and it's an honest to god arcade game!

I can only recommend getting this game if there is a steep sale. If you like the Sonic Wings series, this game can be enough of a fix to pass your time for a short play session. The sound effects is good enough, it's one of the highlight and is what make Sonic Wings standout. I'm quite a fan of the Sonic Wings series, originally playing it at the arcade in the 90s, known as Aero Fighters in the US. For this game, it's not the best the franchise can offer. I haven't played it too much, but from initial impression, the main criticism I have is the conversion to 3D graphics, and the short and limited amount of stages (and thus bosses). The use of 3D background doesn't look great especially compared to 2D background of the older games. It look dated for today and won't age well. The clouds and water looks nice, but not so much buildings and landscapes. Also they decided to make the enemy's bullets pinkish instead of red like the older games, this combined with the 3D background makes it harder to see enemy's bullets. If you love shmup game with lot of characters, then this game is for you. Each character has unique attack and bomb. There are total 10 character (2 of them are unlockable character). and The Music is Awesome. While you in the character selection, Press E or Q to change the music / sound mode, I recommend to change it to Arrange mode for the best experience haha. I bought this game on sale -70%

**Flawed, charming, and very rough on the eyes** This game is... flawed. I do not know whether this is an AMD issue, a Linux issue, or simply the game being the way it is, but I strongly recommend turning **V-Sync** on. With it enabled, I was able to notice visual effects and shadows that I genuinely was not seeing before, which made the game much more palatable. Even then, the 3D presentation still feels rough, and some projectiles, especially thin needle-like rockets, can blend into the background. On **Steam Deck**, this is especially harsh. Some enemies and bullets feel tiny enough to be made for ants, so I would avoid playing it there. The game felt much better on my desktop PC, which makes me suspect there may be some odd internal scaling going on for smaller bullets and popcorn enemies. Some stages are also genuinely rough on the eyes. The **Arctic stage** feels like a flashbang, and the **final stage** is a moving wall of color that can become nauseating to look at.
