About COALCOM: Power Station

COALCOM: Power Station Operations Terminal

You're the new operator at Riverside Coal Power Station.Your predecessor, Earl, was three weeks from retirement when he decided to test whether the plant could run itself while he napped. It could not. Two city blocks were evacuated. You got hired because your resume said you "worked with computers."Your training lasted four hours. Chuck, the plant supervisor who smells of diesel and disappointment, pointed at gauges and said: "Keep pressure at 165 bar. Too low, no power. Too high, boom. Keep water between 40% and 60%. Too low, tubes overheat. Too high, turbine gets wet. Wet turbines are expensive."Then he handed you a coffee-stained manual from 1987 and left. Now you're responsible for keeping the region powered. The grid operator calls every few hours with new demands. Equipment breaks. Systems cascade into each other. If you trip the plant, everyone notices — the news, your boss, that guy who named his cat after a substation.Keep the lights on. Keep your job.

What you do

Manage boiler pressure, drum water level, coal feed, and cooling while responding to grid demands and equipment failures in real-time. Change one thing, watch three others respond. Make decisions fast when faults cascade.

The game

  • 10-shift campaign with progressive difficulty
  • Controls unlock gradually (Shifts 1-5)
  • Equipment degrades, you choose what to repair
  • Graded A-F on performance
  • Continuous Mode unlocks after Shift 5 (endless operation, see how long you last)
  • 21 types of equipment faults
  • Systems interact—pressure affects power, drum level affects steam, failures cascade

The aesthetic

Authentic 1980s green phosphor CRT terminal. Character-based interface. Keyboard controls. The kind of screen that gave operators eyestrain but kept plants running for decades.

You will fail when

Pressure spikes. Drum level drops. Multiple faults hit simultaneously. You panic. The turbine gets wet (expensive). By Shift 10 you'll either feel competent or understand why Earl took that nap.

This is not

  • A realistic power plant simulator (it's a game)
  • Factorio-style building (you operate fixed systems)
  • Forgiving (mistakes cascade, trips end your shift)

Really solid power plant simulation game. Developer is very responsive (on Discord), with fixing bugs and hearing out suggestions. The campaign mode is fairly short, but is good for learning the ropes. The continuous mode is where the game shines, though. You can choose from several difficulties and starting setups, then play through rolling shifts, where at the end of each shift you can use maintenance points, accumulated from running the plant smoothly, to keep your plant maintained and see how long you can keep it running. It is keyboard-only controlled. At first it might take a bit to memorize the main key controls, but they're pretty easy to get the hang of and after a bit they become natural. Overall a great game if you like these types of simulations. Highly recommend, especially if it looks interesting or intriguing to you. The developer has already fixed the few bugs I've reported, and has been open to my suggestions for little improvements. You can tell the dev poured their heart and soul into this, and I hope this gains some traction, because I believe it would be well-deserved.

Fun little game, in the beginning trying to balance the different elements is quite daunting as you learn how it works, but it's satisfying to start feeling like you have it under control and start adjust things in advance. There's still some small UX to patch up on, but it's a great little game so far! Pricewise I'm not sure how many hours you can get out of it as I haven't completed the game yet, but it seems reasonable, though lower levels feel fairly boring once you've gotten better at it.

It is very unusual for me to write reviews, but I do love games where you need to operate complex machinery, so here I am. This game scratchs that particular itch While you dont need to see the actual mathematics behind the simulation, a good chunk of the enjoyment of playing games like these comes from actually _building intuition_ around those same mathematics. At first you will be messy and you will likely be all over the place. There is confusion. But once you master the mechanics you will find the hidden beauty that is in smoothing out number curves and reaching particular targets with a certain touch of grace. No more, no less. Efficient. Anyone that is more inclined to have an analytical mindset (or is just autistic really?) will find this game and this particular niche very pleasing. I put this game side by side with: - Nucleares - Steam Engine Simulator (get the Power Gen DLC) - Chernobyl: Simulator - Rasvyat Apologies if the review is more of a love letter to the niche than a review of this particular game

I work at a small CCHP Plant as a boiler operator and finding a game that is very accurate to what it actually is like to operate is super cool. I even put the game on one of our control room computers and I'm going to use it to teach new operators some of the basics. Highly recommend this game for anyone interested in boiler operation. It's impressive how fun and engaging it is for being a boiler operation game.
