Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition

One of the worst classic 1990s first-person shooters ever made. Nonsense maps of unfun complexity. Terrible art direction. Boring enemies. Avoid.

I played this game once as a kid but never finished a single level. Now returning as a much more experienced FPS player, I decided to complete a few. The first thing was how slippery the movement feels. The character does not stop after releasing a movement key, and the free camera makes it more disorienting. Luckily I was able to choose a fixed camera in the menu, and the game was playable, the cost is flying pads became harder to walk on, but then there's no need to aim precisely, like old Doom games, everyone takes damage in front of me regardless of height. You can push walls, fly to reach secrets, turn switches, yet still the maps are repetitive and are not very fun to explore, but experimenting with different weapons can be entertaining. One unique feature is wounded enemies occasionally kneel down and beg for lives. More interestingly, some may play dead then get back up and attack if you ignore them. Night Dive once again did a brilliant job in the re-release, but the base game is just not fun I had this game back in the 90's and it wasn't fun then. I have no idea what I was thinking giving it another go.

Not even Nightdive's talent can turn Rise of the Triad into a good game. The biggest problem is the level design, it is simply garbage and completely idiotic. Everything else is actually fine, it’s only the extremely poor levels that ruins the experience. I would actually recommend the remake over the original. Yes, the remake is a lazy cash grab, but unfortunately, it is still the better game.

It's a classic staple from the 90s, just buy it, great remaster.
