About Alone in the Dark 1

A suspicious suicide. A chilling curse. A malevolent power. Finally, a wicked dark secret. This is Derceto, a legendary Louisiana mansion where, against your better judgment, you're drawn into a world of shadows to explore the darker side of Jeremy Hartwood's imagination.

Despite a paralyzing sense of personal danger, your quest for truth drives you to investigate the old house. But, you didn't know that, by entering Derceto, you'll be plunged into the daily nightmare that was Jeremy Hartwood's life. You weren't prepared for the torturous howls that resound from deep within its halls. You didn’t foresee the shadowy corridors that seemingly have no end. You couldn't anticipate the brooding, gloom-filled rooms, the pervasive weight of dread, the heavy sense of evil that gills the atmosphere and the very house itself.

Had you known, you might have refused this task. But alas, you accepted, and now you must make your way through this spine-tingling adventure alone... and in the dark.
- The grand-daddy of survival horror genre

- A memorable soundtrack, excellent voice acting, and a thrilling story will keep you hooked for hours

- Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's universe, where ancient evils of unimaginary power play with human lives

- Includes Jack in the Dark bonus adventure

First playthrough review time. Alone in the Dark is one of the earliest survival horror games. It uses supernatural horror ideas and focuses more on mood than action. The graphics look very old now, but at the time the mix of 3D characters and pre-rendered backgrounds felt new. The game is mostly about moving through a large mansion, finding clues, and solving puzzles while staying away from danger. Supplies are limited, especially ammo, so using them without thinking can cause problems later. Fighting is not always needed, and many situations can be avoided. Sound and setting do most of the work during play. Overall, the game is about exploring a mansion, solving puzzles, and dealing with danger using limited resources. Some parts have not aged well, like the controls and camera angles, but it still shows the early style of survival horror games. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3189299588

8/10 Beautiful atmospheric DOS game that is clearly what Resident Evil was riffing on. Tricky controls bog it down a bit.

It's cute. Genuinely full of a niche charm that might not appeal to everyone, but while it's janky and rough around the edges, getting a grip with the controls doesn't actually take that much and after that it's an OKAY time. I can't say it's doing anything that's necessarily worth your time, but I do think that when on sale it's worth the price and definitely worth giving a nice look into history. If you want something doing fixed camera horror, there are better options, more entertaining options, and it makes this game tough to recommend since I can't in good faith say that there's anything here that would be worth going back to unless you specifically need a game with this old charm to scratch your itch. I might give it a full playthrough one day, but there's definitely a lot of good reasons resident evil is what the general majority would recommend.

Alone in the Dark is a underrated hidden gem classic that was overshadowed by games such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, people only know about this game because it was the first 3D horror game and the inspiration for future 3D horror games, but not many people have actually played it they most likely only seen videos of it or even worse, play the later games in the series such as AitD 2008, AitD: Illumination, or the recent remaster which are all later entries in the series that made the series worse, Alone in the Dark 1 is a game that all gamers, even if they’re not a fan of horror games, should all play this game once in their lifetime because it’s one of the most important video games ever developed, Alone in the Dark 1 is short and simple but brain dead and it’s a very fun game!

I was very excited to finally play the grandfather of survival horror games only to find out it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ kaizo game. The gameplay loop is to walk into a room, die randomly to something that gave you zero warning, reload, try again but avoid it this time because now you know it's there, rinse and repeat. You will die at least once in every single room, through no fault of your own. This game is just awful.

The 1992 Alone in the Dark on Steam is a fascinating survival horror blueprint. While it birthed the genre with revolutionary 3D models and a spooky Lovecraftian atmosphere, clunky tank controls and heavily aged polygonal graphics make it more of a historical artifact than a smooth modern experience. The Good The Blueprint: It single-handedly created the 3D survival horror genre. Without this game, classics like Resident Evil wouldn't exist in the same way. True Atmosphere: Exploring the eerie, dark Derceto mansion and reading the melodramatic diaries is still a genuinely tense and thrilling experience. The Puzzle Design: There are some wonderfully inventive and classic puzzles that require you to actually use your brain. The Bad Father of Jank: The movement is notoriously rigid. Wrestling with the tank controls and the character-relative camera angles will result in many frustrating deaths. Rough Visuals: What was once cutting-edge in 1992 has aged terribly. The blocky characters and bizarre monster designs (like the featherless chicken-things) often lean more toward unintentional comedy than genuine horror. Obtuse Mechanics: Combat is clunky, and missing a single obscure …
