An Imp? A Fiend!, developed and published by Blaze Epic, is an indie action-adventure platformer that blends exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving within a nostalgic pixel-art world. The game follows the story of a young fiend who wakes up trapped in the Underworld with no memory of how he arrived, immediately thrusting players into a journey of discovery and survival. The narrative serves as a simple yet effective backdrop, motivating players to explore the interconnected environments, overcome obstacles, and uncover the protagonist’s forgotten past, all while engaging in classic platforming challenges reminiscent of retro titles. The gameplay of An Imp? A Fiend! centers on navigating through diverse levels filled with platforms, enemies, and hidden items. Players control the titular fiend as they jump, dodge, and attack their way through various rooms, each presenting unique obstacles and monster encounters. Combat is straightforward, relying on timing and positioning to defeat foes, while exploration encourages attention to detail as secret paths and collectibles are scattered throughout the levels. While the lack of a map system can initially make navigation confusing, this …

More of a mixed review rather a fully negative one. To start with the positives, I was pleasantly surprised that the platforming controls are very well made. You have a double jump, wall jump, and a dash that all felt tight and responsive to control. Same goes for the combat. The animations are well done. There is decent enemy variety to encounter along with a variety of areas. However, it is terribly boring and repetitive. It's a metroidvania game with no map and rooms that look very similar. While some of the rooms were fun to navigate, it's incredibly easy to get lost - and not in the fun way. You have to collect various keys and backtrack in a confusingly laid out map. There are no upgrades or progression whatsoever. You just have your one attack the whole game. There is also no consequence to dying, you'll just respawn in the current room. Just ignore all the enemies in a room and run until you find a key. My last complaint is the audio - some of the sound effects are ear piercing and the music, while not too bad, is very repetitive. So, while it did control rather well it fell short in actual gameplay and so I'd say it's probably not worth the time.

Tries to appeal to emotions but just falls flat and feels outdated.

It's just not that great. There is lots of backtracking, which is already annoying, but is made worse by the fact that the combat is boring and the screens on the main map don't require you to do anything interesting with your platforming abilities. The "dungeons" are a bit better, but still not that interesting. Also, the lamps that shoot at you randomly with no warning just feel cheap. This developer has several games that are better than this one.
