Ancient: Legacy of Azul

A fun little game that essentially plays like Risk of Rain 1 with a fantasy skin. That's not to say Ancient doesn't have its own identity, though. While your characters have a similar "primary attack + 3 skills" feel of RoR, and the difficulty is constantly ticking up over time, the pacing of the overall game in Ancient is cranked up to 11. The timing is TIGHT, and enemies spawn in quickly, but this is balanced out by the fact that some chests are able to be opened free of cost, and interim level lets you spend any excess currency for items between stages. The bosses are nuts, and random 'mutations' that give enemies random powerups keep the game challenging. Overall, a difficult-yet-fun sidescrolling roguelite that is a VERY easy recommend given the price point. Definitely check it out! I don't remember why I got this game in the first place, maybe because I liked the pixel art and the fights in the trailers and gameplay I saw. it's been sitting in my library for a while and today I gave it a try. I would like the time I spent on it back please. However the controls are so jankey and the movement is so terrible to the point that the game can't even be properly enjoyed to begin with. This is honestly terrible. Jumping often lags, the button doesn't respond, weird control scheme and a UI that's made for ants. The game doesn't respond to multiple inputs at once. You can't jump and press the movement button, it just makes you jump in a straight line. You have to be moving then jump (that fails too btw). Jumping near a ledge would 9/10 get you stuck in place. This results in taking damage, and losing your run since yep, you can't dodge nor change your position fast enough. There are flying enemies coming at you at all times, but you can't aim up or at an angle, so yes, you guessed it, you end up getting hit again because there's no aiming, nor directional attacks. You only attack in the direction you're facing. The tiny UI is very not player friendly on a laptop …

For 5$, you're getting a lot of game. You can feel the inspiration from games like Risk of Rain, but it still plays uniquely. It has enough build diversity to make several viable builds and the mechanic of buying the removal of your enemies buffs is new to me. I really enjoyed it. I would recommend this at 30$. 5$ is a steal.

Love this game. They used RoR1 as a foundation, and built their own game on top of it. It has some unique mechanics, interesting items and characters, and nice art style. I plan to 100% it. I strongly recommend reading all of the "How to play" before starting your first run. To understand the resources, and purple items. One thing that isn't explained clearly is that "sacrificing" one resource at an alter upgrades purple items "tier"
