You know a game is balanced well when you stomp the entire run but the final boss kills you not because your strategy failed but because you cannot execute your strategy. 4 cost cards? Can't play them because the boss removed 2 AP (you gain 3 per turn). Dealt 60 damage to the boss? He's immune to damage the rest of the turn. These are not interactive mechanics. The game dev might as well tell me, "You cannot play the game anymore this turn." I don't know of any other card game that does this and for good reason. The UI is terrible. Artifacts won't tell you won't they do hovering over them. You can't find them in the list. The card upgrade screen is a complete travesty showing every single card you own for all three characters whether the card is equipped or not. The mechanics are extremely basic. Amazing deckbuilder. Lots of characters and combinations to play through many difficulties.
A deckbuilder with a few characteristics that set it apart from the rest: you have to pick 3 characters instead of one. You can divide roles according to your preference or adjust accordingly. This changes the formula significantly. First, you draw three hands, not one, and have to juggle balancing three decks. Decks have a minimum and maximum size and are tweakable mid fights, which is also unusual, but the variance is still very noticeable, though you still have a "main" whom the others support. Rather than the "tree" formula, there is a semi-open man you can unlock at your leisure, visiting whatever section of the map has the things you need the most - or just offers the best rewards/XP/what-have-you. Overall, pretty fun, with unending combinations, and still some random reward elements that keep you on your feet. In hindsight, it would have been better if the game had leaned more into it by allowing you to change your ultimate mid-run. It feels like you're too set into one playstyle once you do, and never once did I have a run where I didn't wish quite badly I could change my ult to suit a nice artifact or card I found. Really enjoying Arcanium: Rise of Akhan. It’s a fun, casual deckbuilder with a cool art style and lots of characters to mess around with, which keeps things feeling fresh for a while. That said, the main downside is the lack of depth once you’ve put some time in. There aren’t a ton of cards to unlock, so builds can start to feel a little samey after a bit. I found myself wishing there was more variety or complexity as runs go on. Still, it’s a great game for when you’re watching TV, bored, or just don’t have the energy for something super intense. Easy to pick up, easy to put down, and still satisfying. Overall, solid experience and definitely worth checking out if you like casual deckbuilders.
Arcanium is quite good in the deck building genre a personal gripe though, the "grind" to unlock everything is just abyssmal
