Arkan: The dog adventurer

My girlfriend and I played this game for a little less than an hour. We were attracted to the beautiful pixel graphics and animation, the cute dog, and the jumpy gameplay. It plays like a platformer bullet-hell brick breaker game, which is a pretty unique idea. It controls well and the trailer represents all this very well. Sadly for us, the game was just way too difficult. We felt like we had little control of the ball and defeating enemies just wasn't fun. It never felt like we were being rewarded enough for completing incredibly difficult levels and even when we made it though a level by the skin of our teeth, it felt like it was just rng. Not to mention we often did it without breaking the stars required to unlock further levels. We managed about 15 levels before we had to quit, and we couldn't really tell any difference between the easy and hard difficulty options. Obviously a lot of care and time went into making this beautiful looking game, but the core gameplay was just too difficult and not satisfying enough to make us want to push ourselves to continue. Arkan: The dog adventurer is a 2D retro pixel platformer/brick breaker hybrid. Gameplay consists of bouncing a ball from left to right to break a variety of bricks, but instead of a paddle, you've got some furry dog thing that jumps up and down on platforms to do it. What I like about this is that it seems to be a genuine attempt to make a video game using Unity, rather than just the usual asset/template flips that we see polluting Steam in the thousands. Kudos to the developer for not only coming up with a novel idea but also investing time into making a proper game out of it. Unfortunately, good intentions and novel ideas alone can't carry a game. The game controls are quite clunky. PC gamers will be insulted by console peasant childrens toy controller prompts. The game maps PC gaming peripherals (HOTAS, Pedals, Racing Wheels etc) as if they are console peasant children's toy gamepads. This makes the player move constantly in one direction and makes the game completely unplayable. There's no way to turn this off. This would have been picked up with basic testing on PC. They chose to use obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's …
