Arthur & Susan: Almost Detectives

Another point-and-click adventure from Spain. Cartoony, clean-line art style which I didn't particularly like, but the bold and bright colors were nice. The details on the characters were minimal. I'm pretty sure that look hurt the sales. No animations, static pictures for the characters who don't move in the area, but lots of poses and/or expressions, but I didn't mind so much in the end. I enjoyed the dialogues as they were often silly and ridiculous as well as the dual viewpoints of the detectives. Lots of item combinations which I liked, but more so in case 1. Case 3 turned more into a dialogue fest. Several locations and characters were reused in cases 2 and 3 so don't except completely new material there. The interface was workable but a bit awkward, removing the need to associate an inventory item with the right thing in the scene, making things much easier but less fun for me. I really liked how you could accuse different people, no matter how ludicrous, and the dialogues went with it. As well as finding the opportunity, means and motive. It was only made so elaborate in case 1, not the others unfortunately. Frame rate was all over the place and I don't know why because …

Enjoyable little game for the most part. The ability to quickly move/skip between scenes/convos etc was super handy given you need to go over each area multiple times to push things forward. The general cases are interesting enough but did come off a bit strange/quirky at times. It was also handy that when you use items it is applied to whatever particular area/scene you're in to complete solutions. So you don't need to be doing the exact x item on x spot like in most other adventure games. Certainly allows you to try brute force or attempt random solutions quickly when you're stuck. Although there are ample red herring items you can collect which serve no actual use in the plot. Given it goes on cheap sale, it's worth a couple of bucks if you dig adventure indie titles and want to support a small studio.

A fun, short, colourful game. The production values are not very high, but I did have just plain fun while playing this. The third and final case was the most frustrating, feels like you need to try everything or just use a walkthrough to figure out what you're missing. But overall it was a good time.

Pros -Nice artstyle -Entirely playable with mouse -Charming characters -Lots of hunour in the dialog. Good banter between the two protaganists. -Fairly decent puzzle design, pretty much standard point and click inventory puzzles -Show all hotspots tool Cons -Its kind of hard to describe but I felt there was alot of vagueness, lots of loose ends or threads of puzzles that didn't really go anywhere or actions that seemed random and the outcome unclear. Also lots of items left in the inventory which didn't really do anything. Maybe it was a case of two many ideas being thrown in. So it was slightly unstatisfying from a point and click adventure game perspective where you want to tick everthing off neatly. It greatly improved though as the cases went on so maybe I'm beeing a bit harsh. Overall recommended.
