At Night: The Student is a short psychological horror game that takes a pretty normal school day and slowly makes it feel wrong. I play as Mio, a 16 year old student living in a quiet neighbourhood in Japan while her mother is away. At first I am just getting ready, going to school and following my usual routine, but there is a much darker situation happening around me. The idea of having to carry on with normal life while knowing a kidnapper is somewhere nearby gives the game a simple but effective setup. What I like most is the way the game makes me find my own way around. I get simple objectives on screen, but I am not given a normal waypoint telling me exactly where to go. Mio receives photos on her phone showing real locations, so I have to recognise streets, alleyways and landmarks and work out where I need to be. I think that is a good fit for the quiet neighbourhood because it makes me pay attention to the environment instead of just following an arrow. It also gives the exploration a slightly more natural feeling. The atmosphere is easily the strongest part for me. ok so, let me first start of with the sounds. so we got the basic wood floor sounds, not even well done, you can hear the cut into the loop and here background noise from the developer. and no matter where you go, grass, concrete, still sounds like wood. The microwave is fine but the eating food doesn't even sound like food the water of the bathtub feels like a while tidal wave spawned in and drowned you. Second, the visuals. It isnt bad bad but still kinda bad, the buildings are ok for a lower poly game but its way too blurry and is unsettling for the eyes. the people have sharpie smudged faces and the scary faces are just cheap jumpscares. third, the animations. where are they and why so little fourth, the achievements. why do we need so many, will i get a achievement for taking a ♥♥♥♥? i woke up in the game and got a achievement, stopped alarm, wash hands, brush teeth, pick up food and microwave and walk out door, all achievements, you can just tell the whole story of the game just by looking at the achievements. fifth. the story is meh, stereotypical horror topic not done right also all find things instructions are like nonexistent, its like finding waldo ina place where e…

For a free game that takes < 1 hour to play, can't complain about the money or time investment. You can tell this is the Dev's quick pilot for what was to become the At Night series (which they have dropped, as of this review, 3 more titles that increasingly get better than the last). Overall, this game's story feels like an intro into a serial killer/kidnapper and you are playing the role of one of his victims. The gameplay was fine. I did enjoy how you received pictures on the in-game cell phone to figure out where to go (but with the advancements in technology, you think they'd just use the GPS and give addresses lol). The ominous fog that does not allow you to see too far ahead makes you feel worried like someone will come running out, great tension. So yeah, in short, if you want to just jump right into At Night, go for The Nurse. But, if you want the full end-to-end experience, pick this one up and knock it out really quick.
