About Aure

Exploration in the open world

Aure is a vast fantasy world full of dangers as well as opportunities. You as an adventurer can freely roam in the wilderness, visit towns, trade with travellers or explore interesting locations. There's a main quest that can give you a general direction where to go next but nothing stops you to play your own way and go where you please.

Map

You start your journey with a hand-drawn map that has clues of interesting locations. However, many of the world's secrets are not visible in the map and to find them you have to go and explore them yourself.

Skills

You can learn new skills during your journey. The skill tree is divided into five main branches:
  • Peasant for those who are not afraid of the hard, honest work.
  • Artisan which contains most of the crafting skills.
  • Scholar for those who want to know the magic.
  • Nomad with skills that help you survive in the wilderness.
  • Warrior if you prefer to solve problems with a brute force.
You are free to pick any branch or a combination of them, whichever fits best to your playing style.

Other features

  • Character customisation.
  • Melee and ranged combat.
  • Companions, buy animals or hire adventurers and manage their gear.
  • Quests, longer, hand-crafted ones as well as short, generated ones.
  • Crafting, convert resources you gather to more useful ones or craft your own gear.
  • Fishing, hunting, gathering and mining.
  • Magic.

It's a bit (a lot) rough but it's strangely addictive. The skill tree system is very interesting too.

I'm still early on, but I wanted to leave some first impressions as there haven't been many reviews. So far, I'm recommending it, with reservations. So, this is a very chill and slow-paced exploration/crafting game with a bit of combat. It's addictive in the way that those kinds of games usually are, as you very slowly gain a foothold in the world, increase your skills, and figure out how to profit and build yourself up. The music is nice and the visual style, though odd, grew on me. The abstract character/creature design and animation is actually pretty smart. It saves a lot of animation work while also giving the game a distinct style. However, each point in its favor comes with some drawbacks. The biggest is typical for open-world games: the world is vast, but not very dense. Settlements and other points of interest are separated by minutes-long walks without much to do other than gathering. Wild animals are somewhat rare, and most will run away if you approach, making hunting for food a sporadic opportunity (forget about bows, they're impossible to hit anything with). There's also no fast or mounted travel that I've seen so far. The day/night cycle is important for a…
