Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is a fun co-op hack-and-slash experience rooted in classic D&D that still holds appeal for nostalgia and cooperative play, but players note it feels quite dated with frustrating design choices like long dungeon runbacks, a confusing economy, and occasional unfair boss mechanics. While the core loop of collecting loot and progressing through familiar fantasy locations remains engaging, especially with a partner, most players recommend waiting for a sale before purchasing rather than buying at full price.

This game is a classic, but this version is a pathetic and expensive cash-grab. There are no good settings, no achievements even though the game had them on PS2 and Xbox, and they couldn't be bothered to add online co-op as an option, which would have been great. There are loads of other issues like the animations being directly tied to whatever refresh rate you run the game at without a way to set fps limit in-game, or the game's price being raised before sales to look like it is at a higher discount than it really is, and so sadly I have to say that it would be best to find an alternate way to play this title, as well as the sequel.

This has been a long time coming for me. To start off with a little backstory, I have been playing this game for over a decade starting off on the PlayStation 2. I have a lot of memories connected to this game and it has been one of my all time favorite RPGs. I will stand by my words when I say that this game still holds up in 2026. After putting in close to 67 hours, I have a lot of thoughts. And with the rose-colored glasses removed I can be honest about one of my favorite games. As I normally write my reviews I will list the pros and go into detail on the cons. Pros: Simple combat Fun story Decent leveling system D&D Feel Easy to play Cons: Enemy toughness Difficulty feels off Boring combat Damage output Enemy Toughness To begin the review, I want to take a look at the enemies that are placed throughout the game. Not so much what they are but how tough they are. The issue that I have is that while in the beginning of the game the enemies are easy to deal with. Kobolds and rats are manageable, but slimes that take forever to kill, and zombies and skeletons that take a huge chunk of your health with one hit are a bit discouraging. It doesn’t help that the gold output in th…
