About Beasts of Fortune

You play as a mercenary band in an open world. Your core tools are exploration, combat, and trade. The world gets more dangerous over time. To keep up, you need practice and perks. To get perks you need score. Score comes from completing goals and beating bosses.EXAMPLE PLAYSTYLES:
• Hire anybody you can, don't be picky about who you fight, fall back while vulnerable, and get your combat-related skills nice and high through use.
• Put together a team that travels at high speed, and focus on courier contracts and trade while outrunning stronger enemies.
• Focus on stealth, and roam in dense terrains to pick off weak enemies and avoid strong ones.
• Get perks (luck of the draw permitting) to specialize in fighting in a particular terrain, or against a particular outlaw gang.
• Explore like it's a bad habit, and focus on collecting memories. Some perks scale with memories, so prioritize picking those.
• Embrace different types of goals, so no matter what you do, you earn score. Or specialize in just one type.
• Get every anti-boss perk you can, and start clearing bosses much earlier than you normally would.
Each playthrough ends on defeat while vulnerable, or at the retirement deadline. Reaching retirement is a victory, but you can beat your personal best score even if you don't.FEATURES:
• Open world travel as a mercenary band.
• Auto-battler combat: no direct control over fighters, focusing on team composition and modifiers instead.
• Procedurally generated fighter types, so you couldn't run the same composition each game even if you wanted to.
• A full system of terrain properties and weather events.
• Use-it-to-improve-it skills.
• Fighters get stronger with player skills (but not equally).
• A trade system with different towns buying and selling different things, as well as offer quality that's random but affected by skills.
• Generated contracts and random in-town activities.
• Almost 200 perks.
• Goals are always voluntary to accept, and will never prescribe a playstyle.
• Most goals come with handicaps that affect you for as long as the goal is not completed.
• Lenient permadeath: you're allowed to lose a battle, but not twice in quick succession.
Not your usual review.
A few years ago I came across two games from this developer, High Strategy: Urukon (2020) and Desolation Tycoon (2022). I played both for more than 10 hours and I was quite impressed. But what surprised me the most was that both games seemed to be almost unknown. If we consider the reviews counts and the last review dates, very few players played those games. These are indie niche games from a solo dev, but they are really well crafted. They deserve way more attention. Sadly the dev does not have much presence in social media and Steam class these games as "Profile Features Limited". It is really a shame, because I think both games have innovative mechanics and are highly enjoyable. The third game from Iron Boar Labs Ltd. was High Strategy: Oradros (2023). It was clearly based on High Strategy: Urukon (2020), they both have the same idea with some differences. I also played it for close to 10 hours but I think that the first one was better. These games left a lasting impression on me, most likely because the enjoyment I got from them was completely out of proportion to how niche they are. I decided to keep an …

This is a fun game. There is a lot of RNG in it, but you do have to think about what you do, what you spend gold on, where you go (further out from the centre the more dangerous it will get) when to fight and and went to flee. You have different terrain types that can affect your team speed (avg speed across the grp) and sometimes impact health. But some units do have better immunity in certain places. Forests offer better concealment but slower passage etc. I like how you can see how well an enemy can see you and you cant really know what you are up against until you move closer. You skills and stats increase the longer you play. I like the contracts similar to other games and also the goal system is interesting and optional. There is some minor QOL needed as far as the tutorial text being in the way in places. And sometimes text that appear on the screen to tell you have gained or taken on a debuff could have darker text to read or possibly a bit larger. But for the most part the game runs well. I love how each game the map is different and so too are your team and hirable, you can re-roll these on setting up a new game. It is turn based so that makes it a chill game to…

In Beasts of Fortune you are the leader of a band of mercenaries wandering the hostile wilderness, fighting bandits, terrain and inclement weather in search of the scattered pockets of civilization that allow you to conduct trade, get contracts, and make your fortune. It is a sandbox game where you can play as a bounty hunter, a traveling merchant, or a scavenger picking through the wastes-- more likely you'll do all 3, at least at first. The game is enjoyable, the core loop being wilderness->town->wilderness, the world feels huge and expansive, and the systems are clearly deep and well constructed. Still, it could use a bit more meat. Notably, I feel like the game could make the player's choices feel more impactful and the feeling of progress as you get stronger more stark. Overall I would recommend it.

One of the most baffling games I’ve played as of late. Possibly a skill issue but I had no clue what I was doing for most of my time playing this game but I still can’t get it out of my head. If you’re a big fan of management games and auto battlers, this could be right up your alley. Big ups to the devs for creating something so unique and engaging.

An interesting very unforgiving variant of a warband management game. First things first. This is neither a Mount an Blade nor a Battle Brothers clone just with a pixel art style. This game is it's own beast and takes some inspirations from them. Overall I would say it accomplishes what it want's to be with a minimalistic art style and I can reccommed it to anyone who likes these sandbox like games and doesn't care about the newest graphics. To any one else this could be lacking some features. On the postive site the game has several points going for it: - A very minimalistic and sleek ui. Not to many windows or big text dumps. Once you get used to the symbols and their meaning you get a lot of information with little clutter - The goal progress system is great and gives you a chance to increase your score with different playstyles. You can even switch up the way your band plays whenevere you wan't - Very unforgiving game. If you like a game that doesn't hold your hand but rather is out to end you and won't hold back, then here is a game for you. The description of the game says that you get a second chance after a loss, which can come quicker then you think. But after a los…
