Beyond the Long Night, developed by Noisy Head Games and published by Yogscast Games, is a charming yet challenging twin-stick roguelike that takes players into a mysterious underground world full of color, melancholy, and quiet wonder. At first glance, its whimsical art style and gentle music suggest a lighthearted experience, but beneath that cheerful surface lies a surprisingly tense and emotional adventure. The game begins with your nameless character awakening deep within the Dark Mountain, floating by a set of balloons. You quickly learn that the world around you is caught in a recurring cycle of destruction and renewal caused by a supernatural storm known as the Long Night. Your task is simple in premise yet immense in execution—to ascend the mountain, uncover its secrets, and perhaps find a way to end the endless loop that dooms its inhabitants to repeat the same tragedy again and again. The gameplay blends the exploration and discovery of a metroidvania with the procedural unpredictability of a roguelike. good game
11% have beaten a run. 3.7% have beaten the game. If you're here for a super in-depth roguelike, you can probably tell by the other reviews you're not going to get that. The builds are shallow and every run is pretty much the same with no variety. I'd say the bullet hell gameplay and roguelike features are more of a backdrop for its puzzles and story, which are spread out exploring and doing tasks in the runs. This makes the game kind of a mix between ANIMAL WELL and Spelunky. The game is notably difficult, if you play with its base difficulty settings. If you can put up with a hard as nails experience, there's something here to enjoy about this game. I had fun at least. Hoping that review score can go up. NOTE: You can turn down the difficulty with multiple helpful settings, but I personally think it takes away some of the charm of the game.
It's a fun roguelike. Meta-progression is mostly about knowledge, but there are a few things to gain here and there. Accessibility options to make it easier or harder exist as well.
I like zooming around.
while it looks good and is kindah smooth, its just boring, combat is boring, exploring is boring, monsters are boring. a real shame :(
