"BLEAK: Welcome to Glimmer" is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. This platformer has you controlling a guy called "Bleak", was very badly made with sloppy jumping mechanics, badly designed maps, no checkpoints, godawfully bad technical presentation... the pricing on this compared to the actual quality is an excercise in delusion. Platforming is an old, mostly dead genre, and this lacklustre experience, while it doesn't have an upfront cost, isn't saving the genre... it's no surprise this failed to capture any attention from gamers in the era of immersive 3D gaming. On the topic of visuals, the weak looking 2D retro assets seem like they'd be more at home in a browser game or a mobile app. 3D graphics accelerators hit the mainstream of PC gaming in the mid 1990's with cards like the ATI Rage and Voodoo3D, there's no excuse for such poor 2D graphics in 2025. BLEAK: Welcome to Glimmer is a challenging 2D action platformer that combines precision-based movement with a surprisingly elaborate fantasy setting. Developed and published by Novelline, Inc., it approaches the genre with ambitions beyond simply testing reflexes. Its demanding stages are accompanied by a story about family, isolation, discovery, and survival, while optional routes, multiple playable characters, competitive elements, and extensive lore give the adventure more substance than its relatively straightforward platforming foundation might initially suggest. The story revolves around Bleak, a young Sourcer who has spent much of his existence sheltered from the dangers of the outside world. His sister Asha has protected him while he occupies himself repairing Glitch, a damaged C.O.G. surveyor robot. BLEAK: Welcome to Glimmer is a difficult 2D platformer that caught my attention because it has a much bigger world behind it than I expected. I play as Bleak, a young Sourcer who has spent most of his life hidden away with his sister Asha. After she is discovered and arrested, Bleak finally leaves his home with his rebuilt robot Glitch and has to make his way through Glimmer. The game is built around platforming first, but there is also a proper story and a huge amount of lore about the world, its races and its history. It feels like the first part of something much bigger rather than a completely self contained adventure. The platforming is definitely the part I spend most of my time dealing with. There are more than 20 levels, and the game is very clear about wanting to make me work for every bit of progress. Some levels have multiple routes, so I can sometimes choose a safer path or try something more difficult if I want a better time. I like that because the challenge is not just about reaching the end. Once I understand a level, I can start looking for faster routes and trying to improve how I move through it. The time trial leaderboards give that side of the game some extra …
