About Chasm: The Rift

Prepare for terror in this ground-breaking classic old-school FPS. Following the destruction of Time you are left to battle in this horrific hellhole of multilevel interconnected missions populated by gruesome grotesque creatures.

ABOUT

Having its roots in 1997 and developed in Ukraine, Chasm: The Rift is one of the most thrilling and innovative FPS from this era and the first Eastern European boomer shooter ever made.

THE STORY

Feeling you are no longer alone, you turn, with just enough time to shoot, killing the mutation charging mercilessly toward you. You begin to sense an eerie feeling of fear in the air, but your skin crawls as you realize it's your own...What was that thing? Again and again you shoot, battling more strange beasts; all grotesque mutations of creatures you once knew. Suddenly the inexplicable becomes clear. Time channels have formed in the Earth's atmosphere, turning once normal life forms into something they were never meant to be. As part of a special commando unit, you must not only ward off and eradicate the beasts, but destroy the time channels to finally rid the Earth of these deadly mutations.

GAMEPLAY

Along with the heart-pounding adventure through the Corridors of Time and the satisfaction of ripping limbs from hideous monsters with the iconic BladeGun and an innovative weather system, the player will now be able to enjoy this late 90’s FPS classic, which has been localized into twelve languages and which offers full 4K support, improved sound design, and multiple achievements.

GAME FEATURES

  • Blow off monsters' limbs even as they continue to attack with remaining appendages
  • Different effects including water, rain, snow, wind, smoke, dust, sparks, explosions and distant fades
  • Awesome array of weapons, including unique Blade Gun
  • Enhanced graphics
  • Improved sound design

BONUS

The original Chasm: The Rift version powered by DOSBox is included as a bonus.

Despite running well out of the box, the game is just not that good. It's really short (2-3h to beat), the guns feels mostly useless outside the shotgun and the level design is pretty bad, sometimes requiring you to take damage just to progress, which can softlock you. Enemies aren't great too, with many being slow dumbasses that just walk towards you while throwing a rock, while others are a hitscanning health tax. Just play Quake, man, the dismemberment aint worth it.

This is not "Quake", although the comparison is hard to avoid: a dark old FPS with keys, switches, corridors, tight shooting, and monsters. Still, "Chasm" is noticeably simpler and flatter: less verticality, more narrow passages, and a stronger feeling of early 3D. As a 90s retro shooter, though, it still works. The story is, to be blunt, bad: time rifts, mutants, briefings, and very basic motivation. But that is not really a problem. In the spirit of Carmack's old view on stories in shooters, the plot here is mostly an excuse to pick up a weapon and start clearing levels, not something valuable on its own. I liked the levels because they are fairly easy to navigate with the minimap. I rarely felt lost because of poor level design. The main combat feature is dismemberment. It is not just cosmetic: you can shoot off an enemy's weapon or limb, and their behavior changes afterwards. It is especially satisfying when a ranged enemy loses an arm and becomes much less dangerous. It makes the firefights feel more tactical. Another fun part is baiting enemies into attacking each other and watching them sort things out on their own. I also liked the bosses because they are not ju…

Fun, but very short.

Is this Quake? Not at all, so it's one of the worst comparisons you can make. It's not as 'fast and quick'. However, it's great and features one of the bleakest endings in the old shooter games. Moreover, the developers even added the expansion pack, and every now and then feature some really good mods. Give it a try, Chasm: The Rift is one of a kind
