Nice city builder with decent graphics. In this one, the focus is on neighborhood demographics, so balancing your have-nots and blue-collars and several other socio-economic groups becomes important. Some of them don't get along so you have to be sure your neighborhoods are developing in ways that don't lead to "cultural tensions". As I'm writing this, I haven't yet beaten the first scenario, so I'm basing my review on the game's premise and graphics. I'll tentatively say that the scenarios aren't easy, but they appear to be doable. But there's also a free-mode, so I'm not worried. As someone who loves CS:1 for the ability to walk down its sidewalks and look around, I'm happy with this game. Decent price, interesting variation on its focus, and it doesn't make my mid-range 10-year-old computer run too hot. Definitely recommend.

I was pretty excited to see this on the Steam store and got it on sale. Brings back great memories (or fuzzy ones at least) as I had the DVD copy back when this was new. While it may not be able to compete with what Cities: Skylines may offer, City Life is interesting in the sense where you can manage the character of your neighbourhoods or zones; witnessing the chaos and absolute carnage when you place people of extremely opposing worldviews within earshot of each other. Many a time the SWAT team had to step in and get everyone to be calm and civil and ♥♥♥♥. It reminds me of SimCity Societies which came out a few years after this one, but compared to SCS, City Life runs smooth and hasn't crashed on me, yet. Worth buying IMO. Kinda works like a city-builder palate cleanser. You play this for a while, move on back to newer titles and forgot this was in your inventory... for a bit.

Disappointing. It can be very unintuitive at times and despite the level of detail, the camera controls are extremely stiff and details are toned down hard every time you zoom out, very weird design choice.

City Life 2008 is a deep and ambitious city-building simulation that reflects a very particular design philosophy from the late 2000s, one that prioritizes complexity, social dynamics, and long-term planning over instant gratification. Rather than simply asking players to zone land and watch a city grow, the game positions you as a true urban planner who must consider not just infrastructure and finances, but the cultural and social makeup of the population itself. From the very beginning, it is clear that City Life 2008 aims to simulate a living, often fragile urban ecosystem where every decision can ripple outward in unexpected ways. The defining feature of the experience is its focus on social groups and how they coexist within the same city. Citizens are divided into multiple distinct subcultures, each with their own lifestyles, expectations, and tolerance levels for other groups. These differences are not cosmetic; they actively shape how neighborhoods function and whether they thrive or collapse. Placing incompatible groups too close together can lead to dissatisfaction, protests, and even full-blown riots, while careful planning and thoughtful separation or integration can …
