Class of Heroes 2G: Remaster Edition

First off, I'm glad to see Wizardry-likes making a comeback. I am not one of those "Wizardry has to be like the original to be fun" as I love spinoffs, and this should've been a good fit for me. I just have too many gripes. After ~40 hours, I'm not enjoying it. + Maps are pretty neat. I like the different environments. There's not just one dark dungeon with changing wall patterns. + Great class variety. - It's bogged down by a completely worthless happy-go-lucky plot that doesn't even remotely resemble dungeoneering/adventuring. The quests are entirely too many and utterly pointless, often giving garbage equipment and useless loot. The cast of characters in its entirety is much more annoying than interesting or endearing. I'd be fine if they were more of an excuse to go out and die in the dungeon, but they're far too intrusive. - That great list of classes is bogged down by set-in-stone and implied requirements. Set in stone: certain races aren't compatible with certain classes, the weirdest being that Gnome, despite high mental statistics, can't become a mage. Implied requirements are related to the affinity system. Race X doesn't get along with race Y, alignment E doesn't get…

Another great Wizardry-inspired DRPG with a lot of value for the money. Bigger and better than COH 1 in every way. If you enjoyed that, you'll more than likely get a kick out of this one. +Tons of everything: items, classes, dungeon locations, quests +Dungeons are now static locations rather than randomly picked from a pool +BP rerolls don't matter as much +Standardized MP pool makes mages more useful earlier in the game +For whatever reason, I felt like inventory management wasn't as problematic in this game +Works fantastically on Steam Deck with no alterations required; cloud saves are here too despite no store page listing -Random stats at level up still sucks -Mistranslations in some items and skills -Alchemy interface is still cumbersome -I'm not a fan of the complete lack of BGM in dungeons; also why is the party menu music so sinister sounding? -SUPER CRASHY - thank god you can save anywhere and any time because this will kill the game for you if you don't

It’s a dungeon crawler RPG that offers deep and layered gameplay and is held in high regard by many fans of the genre. With more character classes and more content, will the sequel be what I was promised? Or will I have another bitter pill to swallow? While more of the same, Class of Heroes 2G evolves the formula set by its predecessor and introduces some much-needed quality-of-life improvements that evolve it from something that is “just fine” at best to being genuinely decent, especially for the price. There are hours of fun to be had here, and while it may not hit the highs of other games, it’s certainly an experience I can recommend giving a go. 7/10

Like many of the dungeon crawler series ported from the handhelds, Class of Heroes 2G gets to benefit from reusing many of the assets the original game created, allowing it to focus more on the systems and content, and we get a far better game for it. I was deeply critical of the original, it being one of the few games I gave a non recommendation review to, so it's quite pleasing to be able to give this a thumbs up, even if it still won't blow veteran dungeon crawlers away. The series is obviously aimed toward younger players, and that's fine, because it serves as a decent gateway game into Wizardry style dungeon crawlers, whereby you get a taste of the complex systems such as the character creation, gearing, and crafting, with most of the difficulty/complexity stripped away. The game is still a button masher whereby you can cruise through 90% of the game just hitting attack. But that's fine, because not every dungeon crawler needs to be Elminage Gothic. For those that have played or are considering the first outing, there are a number of changes they've made that makes this version vastly more playable: 1 - You no longer have to identify every loot drop. I wished I had listened to the other reviewers. At least I got the game on sale... The game looked decent. Personally I don't mind the artstyle and the combat can actually be fun. But the game has issues, mostly fundamental design flaws, that keep me from actually enjoying it. I'll just list a few of them: - Too much RNG. Especially when leveling up characters. At first I didn't pay too much attention to it which was a mistake. There seriously was a point at which my Bahamoon Warrior (the tankiest character you can build in the beginning) had less HP than my Elf Sorcerer. Constantly paying attention to your exp and reloading when you get a low roll is not fun. - From what I've seen the only means of fast travel on the world map is buying a ticket for 10.000 gold. Which is a lot of money in the beginning. If you enjoy travelling through the first dungeon (and possibly others) a million times to get back to the academy then this game is for you. - The alchemy system. It's as if the developers brainstormed how they can make crafting as tedious and uncomfortable for the player ad possible and then implemented everything they came up with.
