About Classic Marathon

Alien forces have boarded the colony ship UESC Marathon in the Tau Ceti system, in orbit around humanity’s first interstellar colony. The situation is dire, and as a security officer assigned to the Marathon, your duty is to defend the ship and its crew from the alien threat.

This classic 1994 Bungie™ FPS had a foundational influence on the genre, and is now maintained by the fan community. Experience authentic game play using the original data files, with optional widescreen HUD support, 3D filtering/perspective, positional audio, and 60+ fps interpolation, just in case the original is too authentic.

Classic Marathon is powered by the Aleph One engine, which is available under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) Version 3.

i thought bungie was cracked after halo, but boy i was wrong. Marathon is awesome, it got great level design, great enemy design, great lore, and good gameplay. it deserved the same spot that doom, half life, duke nukem, quake have. 8,5/10

It's a Doom clone where you mostly run through tight corridors, shooting lots of enemies. There is an actual story, though. This game doesn't even have a shotgun, I don't know what the developers were thinking. While it gets bonus points for featuring save points instead of allowing the player to spam quicksaves, I have to take those points away as a malus for how the story really drags in the second half. The game abandons its structure of giving the player specific objectives, as the objectives become "kill everyone and explore the whole map". It just keeps going and going that way. Really feels like a Doom WAD by the end.

Worth the play, suprisingly more depth than I had anticipated. Story was confusing but seemingly intentionally, enough to follow for it's duration but plenty to keep anticipation for the sequel. Played with remastered sound and upscaled visuals, both of which I found impressive. Listening through various remakes of the music after against the originals, I wish I would have either played with the original QuickTime 2.0 tracks or the Craig Hardgrove Remakes as they feel more appropriate for the set and setting than even the included tracks. This game has sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole after completion digging through Bungie's website for more. Will be excited to see what Marathon 2 and Infinity have to offer.
