The ad-copy on the Steam page hyped me up for something totally fresh and new... But that's not what I played. It's exactly what you'd expect knowing Disgaea creator Sohei Niikawa is involved. Turns out without accompanying stylistic flourish, the shallow core mechanics and number-go-up menu fiddling lose their allure. But in the same way Dungeon Encounters was molded perfectly to nestle within my Square-addled brain-grooves, I'm sure some item dungeon binging Disgaea-heads will love this.

It's whacky in all the good ways despite how it looks. Much recommended.

This is a game for people who enjoy grinding and love numbers. Even after reaching the credits, the surface hasn't even been scratched yet. There's an absolutely unreasonable amount to this game, and it just leaves me fascinated as to what's in there, and why am I still playing it?? It's clunky, it's sparse, and yet this game sticks to me, makes me want to dip another centimeter deeper into the vast ocean. Will I even find anything? I'm not even sure that matters.

Very, very strange game. The exact kind that draws me in. Believe it or not, there are not one but TWO million floors. There's repeats naturally, especially since one of those millions is mostly just a hard mode version of the first million, but still. I've gotten to floor 100 in both modes, which provided a fake ending and what I assume/hope to be a real one. There's something inherently captivating about a game that is literally impossible for me, and most people in the world, to complete solely due to time constraints. The gameplay is simple on the surface, but it expects you to crack and break it as you proceed. I don't know if I'm just not very creative but I haven't found too many crazy exploits, even so the basic gameplay is pretty fun. The "hard mode" feels more like a traditional tough roguelike type deal while the default mode is this crazy weird free flowing party based adventure. I feel like I'd like the hard mode more if there were more skills to choose from or just that it wasn't really so hard, the default mode feels too overwhelming to try and make sense of all the moving parts at every moment so you don't engage with many of the mechanics but it feels a lot more fu…

I beat the level 100 and I was confronted to the harsh reality of this game. Will play again. You start the game as Beginner Man, a hero without anything special (as far as I can tell) who is tasked to find all the others heroes that were lost in the 1 billion level dungeon. Some of the level are hand crafted some are generated using presets, I can't tell the proportion but it start with many handcrafted levels. Handcrafted levels are mostly small puzzles or special encounters while generated levels tends to be dungeon crawlers. Each time you go to a lower level, you reduce the penalty you get for losing a run. The penalty is basically how much XP from the run you lose and how likely you are to keep an item for a future run. It's one of those weird game you can't really explain why it's fun. It's definitely not for everyone but if you vibe with it, it is awesome. It's full of weird quirks, the UI is not great, the graphics are bad (but add to the charm). Don't assume that descriptions tell you everything, don't assume anything, just try anything/everything. I hate giving reviews when I’ve barely played a game, but I will for this one. I don’t really like rougelikes, at all honestly, but this game caught my eye. Doubly so since it is Yoshitsuna, creator of Disgaea. The game seems simple but it clearly has depth. I’m really impressed by the levels, how they are little dioramas, and how the player can often jump out of the diorama to find secrets or new paths at the cost of taking damage. The levels seem to have many little secrets which has made me excited to see all… one million(??) levels. The Ninja hero is my favourite because he can flip walls around, giving access to areas previously blocked off.
