Cow Project 1986 takes one of science fiction’s oldest jokes, aliens abducting cows, and turns it into a deliberately small and eccentric game about extraterrestrial employment. Rather than invading Earth or conducting elaborate experiments, your alien needs to complete jobs and earn enough cash to cover rent. The basic gameplay revolves around piloting the UFO, traveling around the environment, and abducting valuable targets. Cow Project 1986 is a strange little indie game built around an unusual combination of cows, experimentation and an old-school atmosphere. The premise immediately gives it a distinctive identity, and I like that it feels more interested in being weird and memorable than trying to follow a familiar genre formula. The atmosphere is one of the strongest parts for me. The 1986 setting gives the game a deliberately dated feeling, and the combination of ordinary farm imagery with something more unsettling creates an interesting contrast. Cows are normally associated with peaceful environments, so using them in a stranger setting can make the world feel unexpectedly uncomfortable. Exploration is also important. I enjoy looking around the environment and discovering unusual details because the game seems designed to reward curiosity. Instead of explaining everything immediately, it lets me gradually work out what kind of situation I have found myself in, which makes the strange premise more effective.
