Cursed to Golf is a roguelike about hitting balls with a stick. Went in expecting it to be 1-3 hours based on other reviews, but that's generally the time limit for when people give up. Used a keyboard/mouse. Thought this game was going to be a cute golf game - It's cute and there is golf - but there's a level of difficulty and auto-generated unfairness I wasn't expecting nor wished for that turned the game into something less fun. I think the problem lays in the fact that describing how to play is long, tedious, and does not tell you everything (including core gameplay mechanics). So it's less of a 'figure it out, learn as you go' experience and more of a chore. I accidentally started in the practice area and was wondering why I wasn't making any money or getting anywhere. Couldn't even sort out how to turn my guy around or change clubs. Then, eventually, I found how to properly start the game. Gave up after the long tutorial. Next day I tried again, thought I had figured it out, started having fun, then came up against a no win situation (thin vertical shaft ending in water with a small gap directly below me and only I'm assuming ricocheting to get through it. Then…
one of the best and most unique golf games
fun animated golf game, not serious. Not your typical standard golf game.
Good game, using golf to travel the terrain is really different and fun!
Help yourself with this: DON'T think of this as a golfing game. It's a DIFFICULT strategy-heavy roguelike in which you have to exploit perks and cards to progress. It's an intentionally very unfair golfing game (the bosses man, wtf), NOT just golf with some weird powerups. You'll feel constant pressure of not being able to make mistakes, and still get set back regularly anyways. Card and perk usage needs to be carefully planned out. Most stage hazards don't get explained, cards and perks are vague as well, so you'll have to throw away some runs to figure out what everything does, which isn't fun because a run can take hours. This needed some in-game item/hazards guide. IF this still sounds fun to you, then you are getting a great package: Some of the highest quality pixelart that I've seen, varied biomes, very polished menus and the BGM has some actually memorable Jazz-fusion tracks. Seen some people have complaints about it feeling slow and clunky, but I didn't feel that personally. All in all though, I did misunderstand what Cursed to Golf actually is, and I didn't really enjoy my time. To be fair the game trailer and tags do reflect this pretty clearly, so the blame is on me…
Great art, animations, music, but the gameplay isn't for me, I think I would've liked the game more if it wasn't so dependant on power-ups and was more about actual golf. It just felt off as it is right now. Trying to navigate each hole blindly didn't feel great and hitting the ball feels awkward. The "map" (in the limited time I played) doesn't really feel consequential either. I think this game has potential, but was in need of some extra QOL.
