"There’s no way out when the monsters are within"The scars of the past are tearing open, bringing forth disturbing manifestations that will prey on your sanity until they consume you in Darko, a short psychological horror game developed by Psicostudios. Step into the role of Alex, a young man trapped in his own mind as a psychotic episode unfolds inside his home.

STORY

After waking from a heavy nap, Alex panics when he realizes he forgot to take his schizophrenia medication. As he searches the house for his pills, terrifying visions from his past materialize, pursuing him relentlessly. If they catch him, it’s over. To survive, Alex must recover his medication and uncover the haunting truth behind his memories.

FEATURES

  • Distinctive retro-inspired 3D visuals with an unsettling, abstract atmosphere.
  • Search the house for medication while piecing together fragments of Alex’s troubled past.
  • Unscripted scares: the monsters that hunt you can appear at any moment, creating truly unpredictable horror.

✦ AI summary

Darko impresses players with its creepy atmosphere, unsettling art direction, and genuinely frightening monster design that keeps you on edge throughout the brief experience. However, the game is quite short (completable in under an hour) with unclear objectives and an ambiguous ending, leading players to question its value even at the discounted price, though some appreciate supporting the indie developer's promising work.

I am unsure as where to begin with this review. This game is not at all what i thought it would be. That can or cannot be a bad thing, but in the case of "Darko", it's a good thing. At the time of buying, playing, and beating [all of which was done in less than an hour], it has 0 reviews. This game does a lot of things right, and a few things kind of poorly. I will start with the positives. POSITIVES: --I personally really love the art direction, it's hard to hate, but looks very good for unity. The monsters are genuinely scary, and it fits well with what its going for story wise. I also would like to think the characters arms are actually the dev's arms, and were recorded and edited into the game. --The ambiance is actually very creepy, It had me on edge almost the entire time, and fit the intended vibe. Following that, the noises the monsters make were very scary, occasionally making me jump and not want to go into a room, anticipating the monster attacking me --The story is actually very interesting, and the monsters make more sense after having gotten all the notes and paid attention, I will refrain from spoiling anything --This is the creators ONLY game, and I think might be…

This game really surprised me, with having only one review and no other videos on it, I didn't necessarily know what to expect. What I experienced is what can only be described as an eerie "roam your home" type game with monsters that weren't very difficult to avoid but still gave you a fright when they showed up. I'll say that I don't know 100% if this game has an ending per say, I did all that I could figure out, looked around some more, and then left it at that. I like to be fully transparent and honest in my reviews and while I enjoyed the game for what it was, I would not recommend it at it's normal price of $8 USD. I'm not sure if I'd recommend it at the Introductory offer of 30% off at $5.59 either, as short as it was, but I do gladly support small promising indie developers to help further their career. All in all, if this is Altramentum's first game, it's very well done and I'm excited to see what they make in the future. I enjoyed it, and if anyone reading this want's to see more on it, I'll have a YouTube video covering it out soon!
