Deadnaut: Signal Lost

Tried my best to enjoy this game but it was a frustrating play. Most of the time there isn't much going on; you move your deadnaut from one room to the next. Occasionally you will find a corpse (which will gain you more knowledge, i.e. currency) and every now and then, maybe a blueprint (new gear) or a suit upgrade (new ability - most are kinda meh). You need to maintain focus throughout as the situation can go "belly up" very quickly. If RNG decides to screw you over, you may find your deadnaut surrounded by enemies and end up dying. If you hadn't yet found a cloning station by then, that's just too bad.. your game is over and you need to restart from zero. Hours of gameplay lost. I did these a few times and just gave up on it. I was waiting for the game to get more interesting but sadly, it didn't for me. I want to love it as the premise is interesting but sorry, this just isn't fun.

A massive improvement on the original Deadnaut. The most important differences are that you control only one deadnaut instead of a team, and that the game is turn-based instead of real-time, making it much more like a traditional roguelike. But both changes are for the better, as the relationships system of the first game wasn't very good, and turn-based gives you far more control in a game where a single wrong move can be deadly. What it does retain is the original game's superb, dark atmosphere where you feel constantly isolated and never know when a new danger will strike (think movies like Aliens and Event Horizon), and expands upon it. Just like in the original game, you don't directly control your deadnaut, but give them commands through your interface, which can actually be electronically jammed or damaged. There is little exposition and much ambiguity in the game's lore (which is rather sparse), but I feel it's intentional, as it allows you to connect the dots and so many unknowns and uncertainties further enhance the atmosphere. Eh. I play a lot of roguelikes, this one didn't grab me. Kind of atmospheric for a very brief time, but very rapidly becomes repetitive and clunky. It is very easy for things to go sideways in an eyeblink but the dullness of much of the gameplay makes me want to move fast and in this game going fast is dead. Maybe I will try it again, but I doubt it.

Lots of fun if you like immersive turn based one man army roguelikes.
