Dino Trauma

This is the epitome of a PS2 style FPS. Think Turok Evolution with a dash of Dino Crisis and a hint of the original Doom games. If you're looking for a fun shooter with some light puzzles, you can't go wrong here. At the time of this review, the game is incomplete (currently in early access) and you'll only be able to make it about 1/2 way through episode 2, but the game is a lot of fun and I am highly anticipating future updates.

This is a fun, old-school FPS game where dinosaurs are the main focus. The levels are very big and complex with different branching paths, puzzles, and some backtracking. I enjoy the mobile lab "hub" between levels and there is a points system allowing you to upgrade your character. The lore behind the game is just deep enough to keep you engaged and for an Early Access title it's surprisingly well put-together. The creature design is pretty standard fare for dinosaurs but there is a nice variety. The puzzles and progression range from intermediate to difficult and honestly I had to look up a few of them up. The readability of some progression paths in missions isn't super clear, even if you scour areas for collectibles and hints. The game runs fine and the graphics are a stylized PS1 style. Dino Trauma is a nice mix of Quake, Dino Crisis, and Singularity. I got this at launch and wasn't super impressed, but the game has come a long way through regular updates, and I definitely recommend it even at its full price. Solid 7.5-8/10 on a bad day, hopeful for an expanded story and more polish!

Fun, novel, and importantly to me at least, not life wasting. The game absolutely delivers on dinosaurs and battling said dinosaurs, and the progression of difficulty with enemies in this game is nicely balanced. I played through what content was available on hard difficulty in mid 2025, of which there existed only the complete first set of levels as I understand it, and I enjoyed the replay-ability exhibited by the old-school FPS design of the levels. Keycards, well distinguished sections, and new weapons when a clear milestone is reached. You really can't go wrong with this design. A reasonable progression system allows you to get ludicrously powerful if you dedicate the time and like investing into games you play for the feeling of achievement, but if you just want to complete the game and then set it down like I did, Dino Trauma is excellent for this as well, as there is not so much begging you to get distracted and forget what you had to do today as you'll find it most modern AAA titles. I could go into more depth if I pleased, but these are the major positives that stick out to me from my experience playing. Highly recommend for the journey it entails.
