About Divide

Divide is a character-driven, science fiction action/adventure game with a modern take on isometric adventures of the past. Search for clues that reveal new insight into the story, interact with fully realized characters, and combat enemies by hacking out of sight, or launching a direct assault.

Combat in Divide is stacked heavily against the player. Each encounter has the potential to get completely out of hand. Combat areas, big and small, can be directly assaulted using a futuristic side-arm and the potential aid of an ally. The player also has the option to slink through using stealth and misdirection by hacking the enemy’s own communication.

The player moves with the left stick and aims with the right stick. Everything else from sprinting to shooting a sidearm to interacting with the main character’s augmented reality interface are mapped to the buttons on the top of the controller. Fingers and thumbs stay put, while the player stays in control.

Power up derelict complexes, unlock jammed doors, and delve into long abandoned computer networks as you dust off the secrets of the mighty Vestige Corporation. Players explore expansive isometric environments and stroll through deep matte paintings that bring Divide’s world to life.

*Divide requires an XInput compatible gamepad. XBox 360, XBox One, PS4, Steam Controller or similar.

This will be a short Review but I just need to post it... Divide got some bad reviews because you can play this game only with a controller. This might not be the best idea for a PC release but I'll put this on side... - The grafics are good, the story looks promising, soundtrack is nice but! - the gameplay is boring and bad. You are running around some places over and over again, collect some v-poins (but don't know why) and search for "access codes" to unlock the next sector. What not sound that bad is bad because you most of the time don't know where to go to find the access. The map is a big joke because it just gives you a little chance to see in what direction you should go. But then you stand in front of a door and: you don't have access. So run back in the other direction to find a door where you need access too and so on and on... Then you find a accesscode just to find out, that behind the door this starts again... After 6h I had enough.
It is not our differences that divide us. • Requires at all time a controller. • Despite having a controller, aiming and gameplay in this game is rather unpleasant. • The game has some serious technical issues where my save data got corrupted and I had to restart a 6 hours playthrough all over again. • Interface is hard to understand and objectives are complicated to follow up. Puzzles aren't difficult, but you don't understand well your objectives as the UI isn’t very helpful. Got this for free from steamgifs and I feel I need to give it a positive review since it is a nice game and there are so few reviews here (more online, if you bother to google, and I think most of them are fair enough about the ups and downs) + good scifi feel + nice graphics with some nice transitions from isometric to non-isometric + good voice acting + atmospheric music +/- needs a controller - the plot is nothing epic - controls take some getting use to - some minor bugs, probably due to the isometric moving + different elevations (I once captured and remote controlled a robot on the second floor while actually being on the first floor myself. I couldn't see the robot, only my first floor, as I was moving the robot around) - exploring and trying to figure out what to do will get disorienting later on, you'll be checking the map often (btw, no map available until you download them from spesific consoles during the game) All in all, it's certainly a thumbs up scifi game. No game breaking bugs, easy at first and even later frustrations leave you fealing "well, I'll give it just one more try" which is usually enough to at least get you to the next autosave part. DISCLAIMER: I …
tl;dr
A twin-stick shooter largely in name only, Divide leans significantly more on the adventure side of things, sans puzzles you'd expect. Maybe outright turning it into a P&C adventure game could have resulted in more development time and avoided this blatantly unfinished storyline with repetitive underground complexes for you to wade through. Narrative concerning a dystopian future paired with cumbersome combat system in service of collecting points so you can unlock doors and progress don't endear this to me. Not even with impressive atmosphere and show stealing soundtrack taken into consideration. It's simply unfinished, or somewhat basic if you're being generous, in both of these departments with an abrupt ending promising a sequel more than likely missing in action.
Full Review
Having finished Divide I immediately struggled whether a review would be forthcoming and that's kind of a rarity on my end seeing that I enjoy plopping out walls of text much to everyone's dismay. Why? Well, it's a game that both overstays its welcome and manages to leave a lot cut short. Let's check out how and why. Starting at the very beginning game opens with in medias res set…

This game is basically a boring labyrinth. I'm saying this as a person who likes Metroidvanias, complex levels with keycards, zones you can't reach yet, backtracking, etc. It's still just a big, boring labyrinth, made from very similar assets with almost nothing to help you get your bearings. Making big, pointless labyrinths that don't feel like a real location is bad level design. I would often fall asleep as I moved with my character. Because of the isometric perspective and the intro scenes (which take place on a train station and in the protagonist's apartment) you may be misled to think that it's an action-adventure. It's not. There are some conversations and even an NPC companion, but the screenshots are misleading. The area with civilians and NPCs is 15 minutes long. The rest of my 8 hour long playtime has been spent in a big, boring labyrinth (underground high-tech complex). I managed to "complete" it only to arrive at another big, boring labyrinth. The story is badly written. It tries to be unpredictable and succeeds only at being ridiculous. It's difficult to follow (especially given the unnecessary sci-fi jargon). The dialogue shows that it's not written by a good wri…

It's a fun little explorer game with nice world-building exploring (mostly) abandoned structures in a dystopian/cyberpunk setting. Took me 8 hours to play through (over a weekend), including having to quit and redo some sections because I got stuck on random objects in world (or in one case, *nothing* in-world) and couldn't move. A couple of bugs proved annoying. At one point, I triggered a scripted event but was too far from the next thing I had to trigger, and movement had been disabled, so I could do nothing but Alt-F4. In a couple of places I accidentally trigger main-quest progression which locked me out from completing exploration of the area (and hence I missed one achievement); I don't feel like playing through again to try and see what I missed and to clear that last achievement, I feel I got everything I could from the single play-through, and any more would be a chore. I suspect the large amount of optional exploration was partly because there's a *lot* of doors which seem to be unlocked despite not having the designated access level. It almost feels like it was originally designed/built linearly, and then for whatever reason shortcuts were introduced. In later chapte…
