Dread Templar

It's a fantastic FPS game with some level design and production issues. As far indie shooters go, I would say this one is a gem. Many indie shooters are just straight up "run and gun" games that require little skill as long as you keep moving. "Dread Templar" is more of a strategic fast paced shooter similar to games like Turok or Doom 2016. If you simply run in and shoot everything on the harder difficulties, you will die. This game requires a lot of consideration on weapon usage and you have to switch weapons a lot to survive. The game gives you a katana weapon that you can throw like a spear and this is a lot of fun to use. As you progress, you stumble upon "runes" which are basically weapon upgrades that can dramatically alter the game play. Some give you totally new weapons and abilities and you can create a build more suited to your playstyle. I kind of loved this element because it does reflect the style of a skill tree you'd see in modern roguelike games without bogging the combat down with too much technical detail. An honest and solid shooter that draws on some classics of the past while still maintaining an identity of its own. Dread Templar is a revenge journey of a young man whose grandfather was killed by a demonic being. A mysterious figure grants the protagonist supernatural powers, and from there begins an ominous journey of vengeance and bloodlust that will lead to confront his nemesis. The game, inspired by the 90s shooter tradition, is a tribute to what FPS games used to be: speed, lots of weapons, exploration, and varied enemies whose sole purpose is to give the player a challenge. To enrich these characteristics, Dread Templar borrows some mechanics that other modern games already have to diversify its gameplay: there's a character growth system through runes that represent modifiers and abilities for weapons and the player, the inevitable bullet time (time slowdown), and a useful dodge to escape the attacks of more agile enemies. its okay just wait for it to go on sale, wish movement was better

The game is fun and I do recommend it but I have four complaints. 1) At least on hell and nightmare difficulty the game feels less like a boom shooter and more like carefully navigating the maps and sniping enemies from afar. Aggressive/movement based approach feels like it gets punished. 2) The level design in many of the maps doesn't allow from a lot of movement in many areas, a lot of them feel cramped. 3) Movement besides one dash there aren't aren't any other movement abilities. Besides lowering the cooldown on it that's all you get. 4) There are times when enemies shoot/attack through walls. Besides that the game is great and the music is solid to boot.

A lot of positive things to say about this one. Guns feels good, nice and impactful. The rune system is super allows for unique playstyles. Nice enemy variety. Levels generally have an old school openness with TONS of secrets. Art is great. Music is pretty metal but could get old with it never really changing throughout a level. A lot of value as the campaign plus secrets is easily over 10 hours. Story is...not why you play these games right? I wish they were working on a sequel.
