DREADTOME

DREADTOME is a fantastic little horror shooter that immediately stood out to me because of its setting. I enter a corrupted library filled with forbidden knowledge and hostile creatures, and the whole place feels like something has gone horribly wrong with a location that should normally be quiet and safe. I loved the contrast between the familiar idea of a library and the surreal horror inside it. The shooting is fast and satisfying without becoming too complicated. I have a repulser and a firearm, but I can also make use of hazards in the environment to deal with enemies. I liked having more than one way to approach encounters because it encourages me to look at the room itself rather than simply aiming at whatever is closest. Exploration is a major part of the game as well. The library is laid out like a maze, and I have to move through it to find resources, discover what happened before I arrived and locate the information I need. I enjoyed searching the environment because the story feels tied to the place rather than simply being delivered through cutscenes. The upgrade system gives the adventure another nice layer. I rate it positively because it’s free and was made by university students. A 20 minutes FPS in a repeated library. The most interesting part is the library rotates upside down and the atmosphere becomes unsettling. Yet it is clearly not a polished game, the most noticeable issues is no gun zoom and the weak feedback when shooting or hitting enemies. I won’t go into more detail, but considering this game is a student's project, I think it's of good effort so thumbs up.

A Fantastic Student Project with Huge Potential! Dread Tome is a gem of a student project—and best of all, it's completely free! Satisfying Combat: The weapon sounds are fantastic and give every attack a wonderfully heavy, impactful feel. Mind-Bending Mechanics: The portal mechanics add a trippy, clever layer to the gameplay that keeps you on your toes. It’s a fantastic proof of concept, and I genuinely hope to see this expanded into a full, larger game in the future. Highly recommended!
