Drox Operative

Years ago, I had a mixed impression of a previous Soldak game, Depths of Peril because they tried to mix their Diablo-style ARPG formula with what was functionally a 4X game's diplomacy system in a way that clashed and detracted from the game overall. I would be in a dungeon wanting to finish that dungeon, but nope, one of the factions back home declared war and the game is over now. Drox Operative keeps the 4X diplomacy and has a lot of the elements of their previous Diablo-like ARPG ported over into space opera terms (lasers do what's functional "fire damage", fighter hangers are functionally summon monsters,) and because all the exploration is now done in an open area where all your goals are tied to the diplomacy system (because you only get quests from other factions and there are no dungeons,) the entire system comes together much more cohesively. Just note that Drox Operative 2 has already been out and finished and is just this game but more, so if you have a choice between the two, skip to 2. Drox Operative is kind of like Diablo in space. It has many of the features of earlier Soldak games like factions and diplomacy and randomly generated enviroments and such. I like all of Soldaks games and Drox Operative is no exception. It's fun and absorbing. Even though most people say to get Drox Operative 2 instead I prefer this one. It just seems more well rounded and the expansion is great! A must buy if you are interested in space games or Diablo style games.

Soft recommend if it's on sale. It's fun for a few runs (few hours each) but ehhh, doesn't seem like there's much variety beyond that. I don't even want to try bothering with the other victories beyond fear and military. I'll probably play for a bit more and then put it down. It's like Civilization + space action stuff. It's not too hard to get going (lots of walls of text though. don't see how that's better than being "bored to death by a tutorial" like the devs say in game) but once you get a hang of it, it's kinda over it feels like. Like, you really do most of the game within a run. Another complaint my brain had was that the alliances barely mean anything other than fulfilling the victory condition. Your ally could have literally 20x the amount of ships as the last remaining race and they won't attack with you or coordinate anything (leaving you to peck at the last remaining planets by yourself). Like, I had my ally LOSE planets while they had the aforementioned 20x ships and while I was harassing the last 2 or 3 planets by myself lol like come on man. The loot after beating a run ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks too man 😭it's just a pile of random drops, so it's mostly just left there …
