Drox Operative is a starship action RPG with warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic, evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer for Windows and Mac.
Eons ago the Drox ruled the galaxy through their mighty Operatives. These elite starship captains were trained to accomplish the impossible at whatever cost necessary. Whether employing stealth or brute force, they were always deadly. Using these Operatives, the Drox built a starlane system for quick travel amongst the stars, colonized and conquered millions of planets, and ruled the galaxy with an iron grip for over 100,000 years. Eventually realizing their Operatives were a threat, they attempted to assassinate all of them. They failed. The following Galactic Civil War was devastating.
Thousands of years later, the Drox are extinct, but the secretive Drox Operative guild lives on. They have learned their lesson though: loyalty to any one race is foolish. They now work for whoever can pay. And pay they do! Empires might span hundreds of planets and thousands of ships, but when a critical task arises, they still turn to an Operative.
In the new space race, the major races are scouting, colonizing, and expanding, trying to take over the galaxy by diplomacy, technology, war, or any other means their scheming minds can contemplate.
As a Drox Operative it's NOT your job to manage all of those annoying people, build thousands of buildings, play nice with your enemies, or balance the budget. It IS your job to pick the winning side and maybe even help them conquer the galaxy if you're being nice, more importantly though is to rake in as many credits as possible, well that and build the coolest, deadliest ship in the known universe. Not many screw with an Operative captaining a Dreadnaught!

Drox operative 2 is literally the exact same game, just with more stuff and a better leveling system. Get that instead.12 found this helpful
Years ago, I had a mixed impression of a previous Soldak game, Depths of Peril because they tried to mix their Diablo-style ARPG formula with what was functionally a 4X game's diplomacy system in a way that clashed and detracted from the game overall. I would be in a dungeon wanting to finish that dungeon, but nope, one of the factions back home declared war and the game is over now. Drox Operative keeps the 4X diplomacy and has a lot of the elements of their previous Diablo-like ARPG ported over into space opera terms (lasers do what's functional "fire damage", fighter hangers are functionally summon monsters,) and because all the exploration is now done in an open area where all your goals are tied to the diplomacy system (because you only get quests from other factions and there are no dungeons,) the entire system comes together much more cohesively. Just note that Drox Operative 2 has already been out and finished and is just this game but more, so if you have a choice between the two, skip to 2. I played this game so late because it was in a bundle but DO2 was not. No regrets, I'll probably pick up DO2, as well. In the game, you can move with holding down the mouse and p…3 found this helpful
Absolutely wonderful indie gem. SciFi rpgs are all too rare in a field glutted with fantasy settings and Drox Operative is a foray into a living breathing world where you can affect literally everything all while spacefaring and questing through a procedurally-generated sector one level at a time. Soft recommend if it's on sale. It's fun for a few runs (few hours each) but ehhh, doesn't seem like there's much variety beyond that. I don't even want to try bothering with the other victories beyond fear and military. I'll probably play for a bit more and then put it down. It's like Civilization + space action stuff. It's not too hard to get going (lots of walls of text though. don't see how that's better than being "bored to death by a tutorial" like the devs say in game) but once you get a hang of it, it's kinda over it feels like. Like, you really do most of the game within a run. Another complaint my brain had was that the alliances barely mean anything other than fulfilling the victory condition. Your ally could have literally 20x the amount of ships as the last remaining race and they won't attack with you or coordinate anything (leaving you to peck at the last remaining planets by yourself). Like, I had my ally LOSE planets while they had the aforementioned 20x ships and while I was harassing the last 2 or 3 planets by myself lol like come on man. The loot after beating a run ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks too man 😭it's just a pile of random drops, so it's mostly just left there …
