Ereban: Shadow Legacy

Short review: It does have it's issues, but if you like the aragami games then you'll probably like this. Longer review: When it works, it really scratches that stealth game itch, but there are some problems that pulled me out of it at times. Controlling yourself when sinking into the shadows can be inconsistent, and sometimes you just don't go where you want to go. Enemy sight lines are strange, having me wonder how they saw me, and othertimes wondering how they didn't. Some of the levels are more open so you can approach from different angles, but there's not much to do outside the mission areas. There's mention of a morality system based on killing people, but as far as I could tell it didn't make a difference. The story and characters are fine, but not all that memorable. Overall I think it's a solid first entry, and I hope there's a sequel to expand and improve on everything here, as well as fix the problems. It's not pretending it isn't heavily inspired by the aragami games, and if you liked them you should like this as well.

i'm kinda lukewarm about this game...and understand, for context, I haven't finished it. My biggest problems with this game are some of the mechanics. I really like how the game gets you to think in terms of using shadows and even moving shadows to navigate the levels. BUT to my unending disappointment, the game discourages exploration to a ridiculous degree. And I played this after playing aragami 2 so I was mentally prepared to be able to go pretty much anywhere in the level, but the character will verbally chastise you when you go off track and, for me, that was immersion breaking. The level itself, has so many things which make using your super shadow powers impossible. Light sources, which make sense because the character uses shadow magic. Ledges and light producing climbing ivy also stop you dead. Its such a buzz kill to have the ability to zip around with shadow magic and then have so few places you can actually use it. Fine we are on a desert world with non stop daylight, i get it. But the character can't climb at all. I get that the focus of the game is using the shadow powers, but I can't climb over a half wall? I remember Aragami with fondness, which the game's central mechanic is employing. The shadow merge ability is fun, but so overpowered that using any of the shadow abilities or devices other than sonar in the game feels unnecessary. If you've nevered play a (stealth) game in your life, this might rock your world. For those of us who have played games before, I would skip this one.

I like the idea and somewhat how the game uses it but movement is not good. Your supposed to do key combos for certain ways to move about which aren't intuitive and don't always work. The problem is the camera often isn't focused on you and your surrounding area and instead tends to go over to where you need to go. That's great to help show you where you need to go but to switch to that type of view while moving is not good. I can't recommend the game at this time because of these issues and how it makes the game more difficult than it should be.

[/b] It's a great stealth game with a really fun mechanic, Shadow Merge, that lets you to roll around unseen in any shadow area, including up walls, for a timed period. It's hugely satisfying and gets you to think about your path and movement in a completely different way. There's a fantastic flow to it, and the game uses it very well, not just for stealth, but also for reaching hidden areas and solving puzzles. The world is unique and eerie, and the graphics are beautiful. The character designs and character development are cool, and the voice acting is really good. Altogether, it creates a satifyingly immersive experience. The story is engaging and interesting, and kept me dialed in the whole time. There's a (small) degree of choices-matter, and the game has different endings that depend on your own moral compass, which I enjoyed. The game isn't perfect. I came across a few hilarious bugs: I got caught inside a wall once, and another time I clipped through a massive vault door and fell into a different part of the level.
