About Evan's Remains

✦ AI summary

Solve logic-based platform puzzles to uncover the mystery of a missing genius boy and unravel the secrets connecting you to his disappearance on a remote Pacific island. Each puzzle introduces new mechanics that build on one another, rewarding clever thinking over reflexes as the narrative unfolds with shocking revelations.

Evan's Remains is a mystery-thriller puzzle adventure about finding a missing boy: Evan. The game combines logic-based platform puzzles with narrative inspired by Japanese graphic adventure games.

Gameplay:

Every time the player solves from two to three puzzles, the story goes forward and new mechanics are introduced. The challenge of the puzzles lies in the player’s ability to figure out what do rather than solve challenges based on skill. As the difficulty curve increases, the puzzles become more complex by combining two or more previously introduced mechanics.

Story:

Evan, the genius boy, has been missing for years. One day, a letter signed by him is received, claiming he’s on an uninhabited island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Nobody knows why, but he asked specifically for a girl named “Dysis” to go and look for him. The player will take control of this girl, who we don’t know much about. As we follow Dysis’s adventure, questions will start to be answered little by little. All of the little puzzle pieces which seemed unrelated in the beginning will now begin to slowly fit together as the truth is slowly revealed.

The puzzles are just okay. A straightforward mechanism that just takes a bit of trial and error to figure out each level. That being said, I think this game is more of a story game with a puzzle than the other way around. Unfortunately, the story is quite lacking. The conclusion of the mystery falls extremely flat compared to the buildup. I'd also note that it's unusually cruel? It would've been just a boring conclusion had there not been that last plot twist
of what Andrea did to Clover
. Is it worth the cash? Maybe on sale, if you're just looking for something mediocre to pass the time.

First two thirds of the game promise a lot of great things only to piss you off with the finale. While there is some interesting conversation that can come from playing this game, I hated the way the game wrapped up. It felt like the writers wrote themselves into a corner and instead of trying to come up with a beautiful, meaningful ending, they put a plot twist that served no purpose other than to resolve the outstanding questions the players have. I don’t understand why because they could’ve come up with other solutions other than this disgusting finale they gave us. I’ll admit the game proposes an interesting question but I’m not sure it does it intentionally. The way the ending is framed makes it look like the writers are not only okay with the ending, but support it. I personally felt like my time was wasted. A relationship was built for nothing. I didn’t even feel anything but anger playing it out. Anger and confusion because what was the point they wanted to make? They wrote the main character to be a selfish person, and then made it look like she was going to grow and change through her relationship with Clover. They then take that conversation we had and throw it awa…

A cute 2D platformer with a story that was unexpectedly good. The character sprites reflect retro and the puzzle elements are designed well. There is option to skip the puzzle if you are after the story line and it helps a lot when you're after the achievements. The controls are basic (as it should be) and the anime style drawings for the characters blend well with the entire aesthetic of the game. It's a short game and with a plot twist I didn't see coming (granted I wasn't paying much attention either). Overall, a good puzzle platformer with a nice story. I wish they had also included trading cards though. - 7/10

More than a simple memory remained. From the get-go presenting itself through stunning visuals in both colorful backgrounds and stunning sprites, we follow Dysis in a quest to find Evan on a mysterious island. Here the main attraction comes in the form of puzzle platforming monoliths whose mechanics are easy to understand. You have to step on the platforms in the correct order to get to the other side. It sounds simple yet the challenge becomes trickier as the game goes on while never being too difficult to get one stumped. However, even if that is the case do not worry since every puzzle can be skipped as well as the dialogue. Although you might want to read it at least once since the characters involved are quite well portrayed and deliver some witty lines here and there without becoming too annoying. In fact, the overall narrative went along in a way that by the end I had to take a few minutes away from the monitor in order to process my emotions and what it all meant. This is subjective of course, that may or may not happen to you though it is worth the shot going the distance to see the conclusion since it only takes a few hours. Years later it still holds up aside fr…

I saw this game back then on Opera GX. Then I saw it on steam and had it stay for a while. Back then, I played for the puzzle, but now? I enjoy the story, though, not something I'd expect it to be. This game is solid, man

As someone that never plays puzzle platformers, I found the puzzles to be pretty neat! It's a very short game, it's very story-focused, the game's story can be a little hard to parse at times, but it's genuinely worth playing.
