amazing hidden gem that captures the spirit of the platforming greats from the NES era, but with modern flare. Levels are bite size and nicely digestable. Really looking forward to see what comes next from these devs. A sequel or completely new thing would be great.

Wow. I've had this on my wish list a while, and assumed it would be a solid retro style game. I'm here to tell you that this is the BEST of the retro style games I've played in the modern era. First of all, I'm old. I was there during the NES days, and remember very clearly how they were. These days, developers focus on how hard or cheap they can make their game, because every game back then was super frustrating, right? Wrong. This game focuses on style and fun first. That's important when making, you know, video games. The short levels (6-10 minutes on average) make this an easy game to pick up and put down, say, on a Steam Deck. Do a few, turn it off. It's great. There are collectibles for both your health and mana, ways to upgrade characters, make money, or do quests for people....which could lead to other upgrades. This game has quite a few inspirations, but I won't spoil what they are. It's clearly a labor of love, and I would love to see more from these developers. Fun! Lots of passion and effort went into this game, and you can tell! A few of the sidequests are a little tedious (especially a certain quest chain, if you know you know) Buuuut it was all worth it for the true ending Aside from that a very solid platformer with a whole bunch of different characters to play as Would recommend!

I don't know how this isn't mentioned in the same breath as big NES revival frontrunners like Shovel Knight, but I think it might have something to do with how Fallen Leaf isn't a specific game. It's every game from the console at the same time. There's Kirby, there's Megaman, there's Adventure Island, there's even deep pulls like the Barbie NES title. They're all blended together, but you can see the pieces of them. I'm really used to games that try to emulate a specific other game's style, but I rarely see something emulating the console as a whole. In terms of how it plays, Fallen Leaf is a collectathon 2D platformer. It's got multiple characters, a storyline that teeters on the edge of maturity, upgrades and powers, and an adventure game style heap of bartering sidequests. It starts off super easy, but its difficulty has some actual teeth on it by midgame, and both the platforming and combat feel fun and technical in an old fashioned way. The gameflow *is* constantly interrupting itself. You'll do a platforming level, and then read dialog boxes for ten minutes in a town, then do a minigame, etc. So if you just want an ultra clean platformer, this isn't that. But it is fun an…

This game is a hidden gem. The use of different characters with different abilities means you can shift your playstyle as you will once that character is unlocked. The music is a banger.

Cute game, just gets repetitive really quickly. The levels all feel similar. Not my cup of tea
