About FireStarter 2

Did you know that 9 out 10 wildfires are caused by human activities? FireStarter 2 gives you the opportunity to start--virtually--one of them.

The idea of FireStarter 2 is to make players aware of the impact of forest fires on their environment.

While you can just watch the forest grow naturally through the years, you can also get involved in destructive or helpful ways.
  • Start a fire and see how it spreads and destroys your forest, only to watch it slowly reborn from the ashes.
  • Create clouds to decide where the rain should fall, but watch for thunderstorms when it's getting hot around.
  • Control rain to fight fire, or just to turn your dry plants green again.
  • Play with wind to control fire spread direction and clouds movement.

Fires seems to be unstoppable, as the timeframe seems to be too short for the rain or snow to have an effective effect on extinguishing a fire. as well as the area being too small (but small game). With a few more mechanics, like terrain (size, altitude, water bodies), could become an hypnotic terrain of experimentation for personal learning on fire behaviour. Though it would require more time, enjoyed it longer than expected in its current state.

An interesting simulation game, I think that if someone knows nothing about fire behaviour and the life cycles of forests and forest fires, it’s an interesting start to seeing how fires spread. I know that this game was made by a single person, but in the future it would be nicer to have more terrain options such as mountains, and bodies of water, and perhaps animals to see an even more realistic depiction of how a forest responds to a wildfire.

Do you know that feeling from childhood when a match slowly burns on your fingers and you quietly watch this process (it's very calming:3)

FireStarter 2 is not a game. Games contain meaningful gamelike interaction and game loops, which are absent in this software. Instead of being a game, FireStarter 2 is a software application that simulates wildfires with a vague intention to educate users about fires. There's no gameplay, you just tweak various settings and play arsonist and watch the outcomes. For those unfamiliar with what actually makes something a game, a "game loop" describes the interaction and feedback a gamer has when playing a game. Tetris, for example, has a game loop where a random block appears, the gamer interacts with the block to position it, and then the game decides if that finishes a row or not, increases the players score if any rows were completed, then gives the gamer another block to position. Counter-Strike has a game loop where a player seeks another player, tests their skill against that player by shooting them or being shot, the computer rewards the player if they win, and then if the player survives, they repeat that loop. There's no loop here, no true interactive feedback. It simply is not a game, it cannot be "played". This has misleadingly been launched in the "Games" section …
