About Flatspace IIk

Flatspace IIk is a top-down space trading game with the emphasis on free exploration. In Flatspace, you choose your profession and are given a small spaceship with a scattering of random weapons, then you are free to earn a living, explore, hunt, trade, grow; upgrading your ship and equipment, eventually buying ships with crew members, and discovering the game's many secrets. Each game is different, with an intelligent random universe, populated by thousands of intelligent ships.

Influences include classic space-trading games like Elite, and RPG Dungeon Crawlers like Nethack.

Flatspace IIk, developed and published by Cornutopia Software, is a classic-style space sandbox that feels like a deliberate throwback to an era when games prioritized systems and player freedom over guided storytelling. It drops you into a procedurally generated galaxy with a small ship, limited resources, and only the faintest outline of direction, trusting you to decide what kind of pilot you want to become. That sense of autonomy defines the entire experience, giving the game a depth that isn’t immediately obvious but steadily reveals itself the longer you engage with its mechanics. The structure is fundamentally open-ended. At the start, you choose a career path—trader, bounty hunter, explorer, pirate, or law enforcer—and while this initial choice nudges you in a particular direction, it doesn’t lock you into anything. You’re free to pivot at any point, chasing profit through trade routes, hunting down criminals for bounties, scavenging debris fields, or engaging in opportunistic piracy. Each approach taps into the same core systems but shifts the way you interact with them, making your decisions feel meaningful even without a heavy narrative framework guiding your progress. …

https://youtu.be/AEbh49K2Y50 Appearing unfinished and unclear in the goals for players, the vast emptiness of space is likely all that is on offer here.

Good game from my childhood still holds up pretty decently. Lacks a lot of modern quality of life like in-game notekeeping for trade routes and station stocks, and there's lots of dead air between the exciting bits, but the combat's still fun and the music's still great. It's excellent filler for podcasts in the background or when you just want to zone out for a while running trades or deliveries, and every dogfight is as tense as ever. Just don't try to be a hero playing permadeath unless you know the game by heart, or you're going to wind up like me, running trades for hours, getting your very own Intertrader at long last, and then getting bushwhacked by the very first little alien jerk you bump into as you fumble with how your boat handles. Agony, truly!

I have so many fond memories of playing this game as a kid. Well, well before we had anything like steam to download content-- my friends would be scrambling overnight to download CS over dialup. We always got phone calls from doctors very very early, so I could not even begin to try and get it. I remember sitting in my room, tuning the radio next to my computer to 97.9 FM-WRMF, and launching this title. Did I ever get good at it? Nah. I think I had my best runs as a courier. I just had fun.. and the music is still something I think about all of the time. The menu screen song was my ringtone for 10 years. The fact this is still getting updates is.. I'm shocked. I'm happy that the game I spent a few hundred hours on in my youth is still cared for in some way.

Yikes, the control scheme for mouse/keyboard is oof. No minimap, so first mission trying to find another station in the void is impossible. Combat is impossible with how they setup the control scheme. No mission log, have to memorize the drop point for cargo and hope you remembered correctly.

Unusual mix of 'retro gaming' and in-depth realtime simulation. Solid game concept, and a completely original soundtrack. This is not a forgiving game, and the controls take some getting used to in order to use them effectively under fire—which maybe is sort of the point. I strongly suggest learning the game by using an 'undead' save file and save scumming. You may need to leave your 'gamer logic' behind for this one, and deal with situations in a less direct manner; especially in the early game, not every fight is winnable. Flatspace II(k) is a bit long in the tooth, and admittedly offers players the UI experience of days before widely available game engines could take care of every development hurdle. It is what it is, and maybe that's educational. So, does the developer care about this game? How many developers do you know that will riffle through 15 year old pre-Steam records to provide customer service based on a forum post not even intentionally directed at them? Flatspace IIk is worth it just from the perspective of supporting worthwhile indie developers.
