"Flatspace" is a failed, rather badly made 3D rendered low poly top down SpaceWar! ripoff with some trading elements. The obtuse design, simplistic trading mechanics and "donationware" aspects of the game probably all contributed to the failure of this game, while it does seem genuinely made, doesn't mean it's well made. This features fairly low quality low poly 3D visuals which will deter a lot of gamers, understandably. Gaming is a visual medium, and it's clear the developers behind this didn't understand that. This is only free in a rudimentary sense... the developer has their hand out for an eye watering $22 USD soundtrack "donation" for this as you're expected to buy some extra DLC from Steam... digital panhandling. Like the homeless guys who splash dirty water on your windscreen at the traffic lights. No thanks. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 6 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. about 14 years ago somewhen, i have played this game (or the IIK, dont remember which...) as a kid... then i switched to playing totem tribe, because i didnt understand english and what to do in the game lol. for 3 years i searched for this game occasionally typing in "top down rpg space shooter 2004", but this week, an idea struck - bigfishgames, i used it in the search and finally found it! i am finally at peace now.... thank you for developing this game.

The game is ok, but very limited. I enjoyed Star Traders Frontier much more. This has better ship combat, but STF has boarding and melee combat. It also seems to have a better economic simulator. Overall, this game is fun, but there are better alternatives. I did not play the new version, but I believe they addressed a lot of the issues with this. Overall, for a free game, it is good, but for a time limited lifestyle, there are better alternatives.
