Story

Influenced by the Oddworld series, Ico, and Shadow of the Collosus, as well as Studio Ghibli films, Fossil Echo tells the story of a young boy and his journey to climb a giant tower in the middle of the sea. How and why he got there are questions that will be answered via playable flashbacks during his ascent. The game offers over 15 minutes of fully animated cutscenes and the story is told without any dialogue or written text.

Gameplay

Fossil Echo mixes old-school, "die & retry" platforming gameplay with some stealth elements. As in Abe's Oddysee and Another World, you have little margin for error; precise movement and timing is required to get through and avoid confrontation, as the character is young, weak, and unable to fight or kill, most of the time...

Art

Fossil Echo features a detailed art style, with pre-rendered/hand painted backgrounds and hand animated 2D characters. Adopting the style of animated film, it presents an array diverse environments, from lush forest to snow covered tower. With no HUD or any indications displayed on screen, the game aims at immersing you from start to finish.

Sound

The world of Fossil Echo is brought to life by over two hours of unique, original music by John Robert Matz (Gunpoint, Rodina) and sound design by Gordon McGladdery (Rogue Legacy, Fantastic Contraption). Music and sound work in concert to set the mood and highlight the story and actions during gameplay and cutscenes.

Fossil Echo is developed by Phil Crifo (Story, Art & Design), Thierry Boura (Programming), John Robert Matz (Music), and A Shell In The Pit (Sound Design).

The gorgeous art and wonderful soundtrack can't manage to hold up such a janky and short lived experience. While not the worst thing ever, it is certainly a mediocre game I won't think about at all in the future.

Pretty and gameplay builds challenge bit by bit like a great game should. Short but gives everything it has to offer without padding or lame excuses for extra levels. I had no problems with jumping, although challenge rooms are pretty hard. 10 euros is pretty high price for a game that, without challenge rooms, can be beaten in an hour or two.

Not a good game. Looks pretty, looks simple, but it is not. As others have said, precision is key here. Sometimes, the game will allow you to grab a ledge, other times it won't - and it never explains why. In 15 minutes I must have died 20 times - and then there is the "cutscene" of the screen fade and what not. This takes away from the retry to. Some of the platforming section you can't get into a "flow" because you MUST pause to make the next series of jumps. Not a good game

Beautiful. Short. Challenging (but you can skip difficult sections - temples - if you want to). Not deserve "mixed" reviews, tbh. Get on sale. Regardless platforming: it took me 1.8h to finish my second playthrough and clear all 8 temples. If you love precision platformers (timing!), and can do ~20 attempts per screen and won't rage quit after it, you'll be fine. (I bet Celeste fans will find the game easy ;p)

No 21:9 ultrawide support. Top and bottom of the screen are cut off, making the game pretty much impossible to play. Why not have black bars to the left and right instead?
