About Four Last Things

✦ AI summary

You're a sinner seeking redemption in this point-and-click adventure, traveling through a world of Renaissance paintings in search of sins to confess and absolution to achieve. It's Monkey Island meets Monty Python via 16th-century Flanders, complete with classical music, surreal humor, and puzzles that make weird sense.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. God saw all that he had made, and it was good. Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the gift of life, and the man became living. 'Ooops,' said God, seeing he had created a fool. But before he was able to remedy his error, man spoke; 'No backsies!' he chirped, and scuttled off into the forest.

Story

Four Last Things is a point-and-click adventure game made from Renaissance-era paintings and public domain recordings of classical music. It is about sin, and the Four Last Things – Death, Judgement, Heaven and Hell – and strives to be intelligent and ridiculous in equal measures.
It's kind of like if Monkey Island had been made in 16th century Flanders, by a time-travelling Monty Python fanboy...

Features

  • Pointing and Clicking – A traditional point and click interface, with a 'verb coin' interaction menu and a simple inventory from which you can drag and drop your preciously hoarded items.
  • Renaissance Artwork – Paintings by Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel, Jan van Eych and many many more are brought together into one consistent world, in a way that is also as sympathetic as possible to the original works.
  • Classical Music – a soundtrack selected to fit with the style of the artwork. Music from classical composers such as Bach, Erik Satie, and Claudio Monteverdi will accompany you on your journey.
  • Sinful Behaviour – Although ungodly, sinning has become the new norm in your life. Travel the streets looking for devilish opportunities in the hopes of confessing each and every sin for salvation.
  • Nonsense – A style of humour reminiscent of the surreal, anarchic comedy of Monty Python. Lofty subject matter is treated with refreshing flippancy and gags about butts are taken VERY seriously. But rest assured, while some of the jokes may be ridiculous, the puzzles make perfect sense! (or at least adhere to a consistent internal logic)
  • Moments of Surprising Profundity – Actually, no... Don't read too much into it.

Jokes are pretty subjective. For me this game wasn't that funny at all. I think I chuckled once or twice but it's just that many jokes were pretty head on and fell flat. A burp here, a fart there, it get's boring pretty fast. Some of those achivements were actually horrible to get and so tedouis! The art and animations were enjoyable!

I wish I could give this game an in-between review but since there's no option and I didn't enjoy it as much, I'm gonna have to give it a negative review. :/ To get it out of the way, the only pros I'd give it are the visuals. They're basically just animated collage from works of well-known painters which I think is pretty neat. I don't mind that it's a short experience. It was fine. However, I wasn't the biggest fan of some of the puzzles even if I did get them in the end and some of the jokes were not as amusing as I thought they'd be. All in all, it was an alright experience. I've had some fun but I also haven't truly enjoyed it. I'm staying hopeful for the devs' other games.
