Freak Crossing

The game has a nice visual style which works well for its parody of Animal Crossing, but it's not funny enough and doesn't have nearly enough writing, variety, or content to justify a price tag. The game plays as a series of vignettes of the villagers having some "real world" problem of alcoholism, gambling, fraud, affairs, etc. and you have to resolve the problem. The juxtaposition of the cutesy Animal Crossing setting and the grim world in which the game is set is the chief joke employed with very little amusing dialogue between. You can talk to uninvolved characters during each sequence, but the [spoiler]7ii mart worker[/spoiler] for example has virtually no writing, just ignoring you and obsessively watching a vaguely described soap opera (if the soap opera was expanded into a lampooning of the genre with pictures, it would be much more acceptable). The resolution of many problems is handled through a variety of simple mini games which begin incredibly abruptly. Yeah, the title says what it is. There's a bunch of freaks in this town.. but they're not memorable. Usually, I like exploring maps and talking to all the characters to learn about them. This game makes it feel tedious, running around talking to everyone every scene change. This didn't feel enjoyable and was more of a chore just to understand what's going on. There's barely much that the characters have to say each day, and it's not really important dialogue most of the time. The mini-games are a bit better than the lackluster story. I think mini-games are a unique way to progress, compared to simply dialogue or fights in other RPGs. They're simple and not too difficult in Freak Crossing. No matter if you win or lose, it just takes you to the next part of the story. So many ideas could have been implemented for side quests or tasks to do to make it more exciting. Collecting trash around town, helping characters do shady stuff, I dunno. Regardless, you just get mini-games in-between a thin story, a couple extra platforming ones to collect pets for your house, and that's all. A small yet funny twist to some known games. The minigames are alright but a bit ruthless if you try to go for 100% and the humour is alright to amusing. Its rather cheap and if discounted cheap worth it.
