FRONT MISSION 2: Remake

Its harder than the first Front Mission since you only get money and potential gear from arenas this time. Its definitely an overcorrection in terms of making ammo finite and healing items need a dedicated backpack to carry. You end up specializing your units as either melee, gunner, or long range because XP is limited to missions only. You can save during a battle, which helps if you make a costly mistake. Overall, its not bad aside from some random freezes.

This game's demo is what got me into thinking of buying the series and as far as how much I hate Front Mission 1 Remake (FM1 R), I don't nearly have the same negative experience with Front Mission 2 Remake (FM2 R). Unlike FM1 R, FM2 R actually runs well, have decently snappy controls and serviceable but needs room for improvement UI. I'll preface this by stating: critiquing retro games is hard cause you got to think of it as building blocks for future games. That said, as a remake, not playing the OG myself I found fans' reception stating the remake is pretty faithful to the OG game mechanics with minimal to no deviation which means if there are some poor design decisions then it should be chalked up to signs of the times. This includes this game's complex yet poorly/not explained strategy tactics mechanics that the tutorial do barebones job of explaining. Big reason why this title was apparently the worst received in the FM 1-3 Trilogy. The lack of ability to grind = exp gating for the RPG system also adds to the difficulty on top of the already perceived difficulty of the game (of which this is considered the hardest of the 3) That doesn't mean I think the game is bad lik…

This is one of those games I wish I could give a mixed answer for. On one hand it is an improve to the first game by trying to make it so your choice in weaponry and gear has a lot more weight to it, however the story is hard to follow at times, and this remake is pretty buggy and frustrating at times. However end of the day I did enjoy the ride and I think a lot of people would too. It was a game that the team wanted to experiment with some mechanics that either did pan out, and others didn't, and honestly I think it was still decent. I'll recommend it, but only on a sale and only if you are a die hard fan of the front mission series and want to see the game's earlier stuff.
