FRONT MISSION 3: Remake

i thought the difficulty and enemy AI will revamped but no. enemy still dumb like the og game who can run away to edge of map for no reason. animation too jank compared to og one like no weighty and the melee one is the most disappointing. upscaling old stuff with AI is acceptable but do they review it into final product? i guess no there are a lot of flaw in network image and i still questioning the what is on the face of Chairman Jie, pimple? scar? sweat? or whatever that looks so weird with upscaling. Last one was the final movie Lukav Xiangyu looks pretty cool in game like doomsday mecha lobster but turn out into cockroach in the movie. okay i guess thats all

I really want there to be a "neutral" option. The problem is, I hate the remake because it was rushed slop, but if no one buys it, front mission might well and truly stay dead in the west. So I'm torn. For beginners to the series that didn't play the original game on the PS1, this is a great game. You'll probably like it if you like combat similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, or Disgaea, with customization of the mech's legs, each arm, backpack, weapons, and core. You have a bit of play with the characters. If I stopped there, it's an objectively good game. However, It's a rushed port of one of my favorite games, lacking a lot of the passion that went into the original. The engine is good enough, and slowdowns are infrequent. But it feels like a lot of AI slop went into the game and the remake's devs either didn't care about the source work, didn't play it, or more likely was only given a few months to remake the game and had to cut corners. The mechs lost their original animations and sounds, and a lot of it feels bad. The models clip weapons, the characters feel a bit too airbrushed, and the mechs themselves just look meh. I'm reviewing this remake/remaster - not the game itself. Front Mission 3 is a masterpiece. The remake/remaster on the other hand, is "good", but not "great". The visuals do overall look better, and some of the new UI options, and other small touches do modernize the game a bit in ways that are sensible but not detrimental to the vibe of the game, such as the new "Internet" interface. So while the majority of the game feels sensibly updated, the sound and visual effects have regressed. Gone are the crunchy, powerful metallic klang of the Wanzers in motion, to be replaced by sound effects that lack "oomph". The walking sounds in particular sound like a dryer with shoes in them. Oddly muffled. And the machine guns sound like they have silencers attached to them. Some odd choices there. The animations also seem like a downgrade in some parts, as do the new dmg effects. It's enough that the vibe of the game feels different than before at times. While not cartoony necessarily, it does feel less grounded and "realistic". I do like a good turn-based mech game and this fills the role nicely. I did play this quite a bit in the Playstation 1 days, so I am biased. It was a nice trip down memory lane. ✅Looks good, runs well, no bugs that I found. ✅I like that you can Frankenstein your mech together with different arms, legs, and body parts. ✅The story branches early, so you get two good/different playthroughs at least. 😐With the damage resistance mechanic, you really need to be able to preview the units on the battlefield so you can choose accordingly. Some enemy teams are all impact, some are all piercing but you can't tell before you start the fight. ❌I don't recall stun and eject happening so often in the Playstation 1 version. Nearly all fights are your team of 4 vs at least 8 enemy units. I've had several fights where 2-3 of my 4 units are stunned or ejected in the same turn resulting in me restarting the fight as it's a lost cause at that point. Overall, good game. I had fond memories and it lived up to that. Easy to recommend for TBS and/or mecha fans.
